I've recently formatted my PC and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes version 12.6.2.20.
After I added a folder (where I keep all my songs) to the library, I find that there is no checkbox next to the song name which I can use to decide whether to play that song or not. I also can't add only the checked songs to my custom playlist since there is no checkbox.

Smart playlists have an optional rule to include only checked songs. When syncing to devices you would typically exclude unchecked songs. Unchecked songs are ignored during shuffle play and normal track to track playback.

Edit > Preferences > Show: List view checkboxes.
