if you are one of or concerned you may be one of the 400 or "possible more" Mac owners infected with this malware which Wardle has reported

Only the faculty get to use Macs. I'm staff so I've got a Windows 10 box. Our IT people seem to be a sensible lot so, for now, I'm going to leave it in their hands.

Seriously, though, we are unlikely to be on anyone's radar.

The news media, especially computer centric sites, love to jump with both feet onto any story regarding Mac malware and make far more out of it than necessary, or with any semblance of even-keeled reporting.

Should all Mac users be aware of such stories and always on guard for possible threats? Of course. No OS is immune. But these over-hyped stories aren't the correct way to get message out.

Just a few clarifying details here...

It's unclear how many people might still be infected. The ~400 number was based on how many connected to the backup command server that Patrick registered within a limited time window. The real number is undoubtedly higher, but not hugely so.

Also, the command servers have been down for a while and the backup servers that Patrick found were never registered. There is every indication that this malware has been inactive for some time.

The first variant of Fruitfly that we found appeared to be targeting biomedical research. However, that may have been an artifact caused by the deployment method (which is still unknown), and the subsequent victims that have been found appear to be ordinary, everyday people. And the malware appears to have been primarily interested in things like webcam pix, not financial data... creepy!

Finally, there's stuff that can't be discussed, and may never be publicly known, for legal reasons.
