unable to complete touch ID set up error

I am trying to add another fingerprint in touch ID on my new MacBook pro and I immediately get an error message "Failed. Unable to complete touch ID set up".. Any thoughts? Is this a bug?

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, iOS 10.3.3

I deleted the original fingerprint and started again and this has rectified the problem.

Follow the advice here, especially "Make sure that your finger is clean and dry."

I don't even get to place my finger on the pad before the error occurs.
