This is not anecdotal. I have been testing it with every iOS release. Nothing has changed. Here is how to actually test it:

  • On your phone go to Settings/Wi-Fi and tap on the i next to the network name
  • Write down the IP address
  • On your computer open a Terminal window (Mac) or CMD window (Windows)
  • Enter "ping <the IP address you wrote down>" (Mac) or "ping /t <the IP address you wrote down>" (Windows)
  • Note the phone responding to the ping command
  • Press the SLEEP button
  • Watch as the responses stop after about 30 seconds
  • To stop the pings enter <CTRL>+C.

Every time a major version is released I do this again. The response has never changed in 10 years.

Repeat the test with the phone plugged in; it won't go to sleep. It may wake up for a few seconds if the phone receives a notification such as a Push email alert, which is an external stimulus, but apps that originate communications will not wake it and will use cellular data.

I don’t have that issue actually. It seems to be a problem of your network configuration on the accesspoint.

Somehow it is a thing when you connect to university networks or like captive logins I think.

Maybe update your network security settings to get a captive login. Then it should become visible.

I guess that my iPhone saw a captive login feature in the APs „no internet connection error page“ as it redirects you to that page when there was no lan cable plugged in. So the iPhone recognises that there is a captive and try’s to login in no right way which keeps it losing the connection when in stand by mode.

I now updated this network in the settings by removing it from the recognised ones. And as there was no captive like internet connection error it shows only the auto join.

Do you even got the same issue when there is only auto join?

Tried to ping when iPhone was idle:

Pinging 192.168.1.186 with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.

But if I start ping and lock the phone, wi-fi won't disconnect, tested about 1 hour.

I'm getting replies like this:

Reply from 192.168.1.186: bytes=32 time=712ms TTL=64 - if I get any notifications I guess.

And this

Request timed out - if its idle, I guess.

I'm using own network.

I have no the problem with Wi-Fi on other non-iOS devices (android tablet/phones, windows phones/laptops)

But I have 2 iOS 11.2.1 devices: iPhone 5s and SE.

Both iPhones don't have "auto-login" option. Auto-join only (I posted screenshot later). But anyway, if I toggle off auto-join, Wi-Fi dissapear when iPhone 5s/se are locked. It can takes about 1 minute or 5 minutes (nevermind) to lose Wi-Fi connection on the iPhone. Devices disappear from the router list. In this moment I don't get any notifications from social network, e-mail, telegram, youtube/twitch and etc, as described in this thread.

I tried to contact TS of ASUS (router manufacturer), but they said that it's not their problem, after that sent me to Apple. So sad.

Thank you for that information, I have the same security and network settings.

But I get Auto-Login and surprisingly for me I get it on every network I join to.

I think this feature shows up for certain types of Routers for some reason I am still deducing.

I am gonna try to get to the bottom of this.

I also requested Apple to create a documentation regarding this.

Also can you please state the router you are using?

I've tried another router and it works perfect. Now, as for me, there is no iOS bug, but router bug.

iPhone shouldn't drop wi-fi when locked, it shouldn't miss notifications, it is not supposed to work as you saying, you are wrong.

I asked Apple Support to explain the problem. They said, that notifications must come when iPhone is idle, it can't disconnect wi-fi. They advised me to restore iPhone and set up as new, but I already did and it didn't help, after this they recommended try another router. So I find an old cheap TP-Link TL-WR741ND and it works perfect, no disconnects, no missed notifications, yeah.

You can say what you want, it doesn't even matter to me, thanks.

Yes. It should. That is EXACTLY what it is supposed to do.

it shouldn't miss notifications

It won't if you have cellular data, which is required by all plans on which the iPhone is supported.

it is not supposed to work as you saying, you are wrong.

Yes. It is... Denying it is not going to alter reality.

Then why are you still here wasting electrons?

Just do the ping test like i suggested and see for yourself.(if you are running on ios10 or later). Seriously I write what i just did. Wifi is not dropping like my affected phone. My phone hardly keep wifi on for 20 seconds. A normal iphone i dont know for how long but it definitely not gonna drop wifi and disconnect from router after 20 seconds. Say what you want. If your phone wifi is dropping after 20 seconds its not a feature. period. No sane programmer will code like that.

Ping test results:

  • iPhone 4S, iOS 9.3.5: WiFi drops after 20-30 seconds and stays off unless I wake it
  • iPad 2, iOS 9.3.5: WiFi drops after 20-30 seconds and stays off unless I wake it
  • iPad Air 2, iOS 10.3.3: WiFi drops after 20-30 seconds and stays off unless I wake it
  • iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.3.3: WiFi drops after 20-30 seconds; comes back on with notifications for 20 seconds, then drops

As a lot of my 260 apps generate notifications, WiFi on the 7 Plus it comes on quite frequently. But it still drops afterwards.
