This is not anecdotal. I have been testing it with every iOS release. Nothing has changed. Here is how to actually test it:

  • On your phone go to Settings/Wi-Fi and tap on the i next to the network name
  • Write down the IP address
  • On your computer open a Terminal window (Mac) or CMD window (Windows)
  • Enter "ping <the IP address you wrote down>" (Mac) or "ping /t <the IP address you wrote down>" (Windows)
  • Note the phone responding to the ping command
  • Press the SLEEP button
  • Watch as the responses stop after about 30 seconds
  • To stop the pings enter <CTRL>+C.

Every time a major version is released I do this again. The response has never changed in 10 years.

Repeat the test with the phone plugged in; it won't go to sleep. It may wake up for a few seconds if the phone receives a notification such as a Push email alert, which is an external stimulus, but apps that originate communications will not wake it and will use cellular data.

Boy, did this thread blow up.

It just occurred to me, the entire argument of it’s working as intended is perhaps a misunderstanding to begin with.

Let me ask folks who actually believe that the wifi icon disappearing when the phone is locked, is considered “normal” behavior—do you have auto login turned off as well? If not, is is the reverse true?

Perhaps the reason why others are experiencing this issue, and others perceive it as a “non-issue” is because your phones reconnect to wifi almost immediately? Perhaps your phones don’t turn off the wifi icon when locked?

Perhaps the reason why some people found it as an issue, is because they, like you, have their phones “reconnect” to wifi in an acceptable amount of time before, but after the updates no longer did? Perhaps, somehow the settings for the network reset have caused a variation in “reconnection time?”

Don’t be too quick dismiss people’s issues. Because if it were a non-issue, we wouldn’t be having this conversation on the first place now, do we?

There is verifiable evidence that people experienced a variation in wifi behavior in their phones—this much is true. So to say that it is “working as intended” is disingenuous. It was “working as intended” before too, so why are people all of a sudden complaining now?

Perhaps, stop being disimissive of other people’s concerns, and actually investigate it?

The fact that you can make your 5c, and I with my 5s, behave in its original state suggests that ios is supposed to behave this way. The wifi should not fully disconnect when locked, but should only enter in a “deep sleep” state.

I’m almost tempted to say that older models are probably the ones that behave this way, but I just tried it with an iphone 6 and it also works without disconnecting the wifi.

I have the exact same problem.

I tried every workaround that I found like resetting Network settings, reconnecting wifi, disabling the mobile network support when wifi connection is bad. I even tried with three different access points.

But every time I lock the phone it disconnects. Even when mobile data is off... It is more pull then push. Didnt had that problem with Android. But I dont want to always need mobile data on for push notifications...

How many times does it need to be said? The word "bug" can be used informally to describe any stupid or inconvenient or brainless or troublesome feature, even if "that's how it's supposed to work."

For example, in one of the recent iOS updates, the keyboard now disappears when you use the microphone feature to dictate a text (see image below). It's replaced with a barren area that occupies nearly one-half of the usable screen area. An area that is unused and useless. What that blank, barren area replaced was...the keyboard. So, if you dictate something and then have to go in and edit part of it (as is almost always the case with dictation and Siri), you have to first bring back the keyboard that used to be in the area that is now blank and barren.

THAT is asinine. THAT is a bug. And, that is "how it's supposed to work." It's a manifestly stupid design change, one Apple did deliberately. So, technically it's not a "bug." But it's such a stupid change that it deserves to be called a "bug."

Informally, of course.

iPhone shouldn't drop wi-fi when locked

Yes. It should. That is EXACTLY what it is supposed to do.

it shouldn't miss notifications

It won't if you have cellular data, which is required by all plans on which the iPhone is supported.

it is not supposed to work as you saying, you are wrong.

Yes. It is... Denying it is not going to alter reality.

You can say what you want, it doesn't even matter to me, thanks.

Then why are you still here wasting electrons?
