My Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad volume keys don't work properly.

I had this issue, and could not find the solution on this page. I went into System preferences, then keyboard and used both the boxes at the lower part of the popup i.e. "Change keyboard type" and "set up my keyboard" and it worked. I can now press the Function keys and increase/decrease volume without the dashboard appearing/disappearing! Wish I knew exactly what I did because the first time I "set up my keyboard" the keys were still acting strangely. Perhaps the trick was that I did both in sequence. Wish I could have been more exact and hope this helps.

Restart the computer holding down the command - option/alt - P - R keys before the gray screen appears. Continue to hold until you hear the startup chime for the second time.

Reset NVRAM/PRAM

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

This keyboard requires macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later, and iOS 10.3 or later — for proper Bluetooth functionality.

I have 10.10.5 and using the function key doesn't work. I also don't have the option to select use the F1 keys as standard. However, I was able to use the shortcut remapping to get the brightness keys to work. Hope this helps.

This does not solve the problem. Should the "Use F1, F2, etc. keys at standard function keys" be CHECKED or UN-CHECKED? Neither one of these has any effect on the volume keys (F10, F11, F12). I am running Capitan 10.11.6, BTW.

I have the same issue as well as I am missing the "Use F1, F2, etc." option running El Capitan 10.11.6.

Have tried resetting PRAM but that didn't help. Come on apple. Why is your product not working with your other product?

I have the same issue. Just received and set up my new apple keyboard with numeric keypad but the option in the keyboard system preferences to control the function keys does not exist - this option is not there:

Select "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"

My iMac is not recognizing the Function Keys or the Function Key alternative uses.

Function keys can be "mapped" for different actions.

Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > confirm the checkbox next to "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is checked.You can also eeeview settings under the Shortcuts tab.

I don't even have that option. I am running the latest software too. There is no "Use F1, F2, etc. keys at standard function keys" in the keyboard preferences.

Are you looking in the Keyboard tab?

I'm having the same problem and there is no option to select F!, F2 box under preferences. Plus my keyboard is slightly bent out of the box. is that the way it is designed?

This is my problem as well. There are no step 1 or 2 options about the Function keys in my system preference. My iMac is not recognizing my keyboard as an Apple Keyboard

I have the same issue as well.

I am running 10.10.5. The fn key does not make any of the function keys work for me. The volume, brightness, windows open, music controls and volume controls do not work.
