I have a Time Capsule I'm trying to use as a router. The modem is connected to the Time Capsule and the internet works via ethernet, but the wifi network doesn't, and it looks different than it usually does:
What does this mean? All my firmware and OS is all up to date as well.
The Time Capsule is brand new and this is my first time using it to replace my old router. The modem has not changed. I have reset the Time Capsule, re-entered my account information, and let the device set itself up. The problem persists. I understand the Time Capsule, acting as a router, needs to connect to the modem via PPPoE. But why is my wireless network showing up as a PPPoE network? And yes, to be absolutely clear, the modem is connected to the TC in the WAN port and the TC is connected to the iMac via ethernet.

But I would delete or request Apple mod to delete your screenshot showing your Public IP if that is static ..
So there is nothing wrong with the setup.. this is purely a wireless issue on the Mac.
The wireless names are different..
On your first screenshot.. on the first post.. wireless name is The Black Lodge
I presume this was from the old router.
Your TC is Black Lodge .. that is completely different name.. so
Go to your wireless network preferences and delete all the existing names. Click on the negative symbol - below the List of Preferred Networks box after you select each name and delete it. Remove them all.. !! I have just done it so it only shows up the one wireless network.
Also in the main network area.. remove the PPPOE connection.
It should be in the list.. get rid of it.. no longer needed.
Again I don't have one.. i am just showing you where to find it.
Then reboot the computer and rediscover the wifi. It will show up exactly as you have named it in the TC.
Put in your password and save it as your preferred network.
It should work fine from that point.
The network name changed because I changed it after I reset the TC.

IP is not static, and anyway once this is actually working, I'll be using my VPN.
I've rebooted, there are no other wifi networks in the list, I've changed the names several times. It used to be something completely different before this, I've been trying since last night. I'm pretty sure the name has nothing to do with it. It's not my computers, because it's really unlikely every computer in the house has the same thing wrong with it. The TC is doing something wrong. Every computer that connects to it ends up having that same strange arrow and PPPoE thing in the wifi network pop-up list.
This is the network tab in the TC:
Has the Time Capsule been connected to the same modem in the past and things have been working OK?
Or, are you trying to set up the Time Capsule to work with the modem for the first time?
Whenever you change the modem or Internet Service Provider, it is always a good idea to reset the Time Capsule back to factory default settings and then set up the Time Capsule again, so that it can obtain the correct settings from the modem.
If you have not already done that, now would be a good time to do this.

If you are still having problems, we need more information as follows:
1) The make and model number of your modem
2) What device.....a Mac, a PC, an iPhone/iPad, etc that you are using to try to set up the Time Capsule
Your screenshot shows PPPOE .. this is wrong.
The connection from the computer to the TC will not use PPPOE..
I suspect you have been using the computer to connect directly to the modem..
Now you need to remove PPPOE as a method of connection and use plain wireless network. Auto DHCP setup.
Did you clear out all the existing wireless names?? Reboot the computer and reconfigure it.
No luck.. then..
Change the wireless name on the TC to something completely different.. e.g. TCgen5 (use short name, no spaces and pure alphanumerics.. same for password).
Please also show me the network tab for wireless in one of the computers that is not working if you still have issues.. because the PPPOE must be coming from somewhere. And perhaps the network tab in the TC.. although that is unlikely to contribute.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with your TC configuration.. that is why I keep thinking it has to be computers.
I cannot reproduce your problem.. Although I have major issues with TC and PPPOE, but that is WAN side problems not LAN side.
However I do not trust network in Sierra.. do you have a non-apple computer you can test with.. ??
I do not have anything else to offer at this point other than work around.
Because of my own issues with Airport Routers and PPPOE.. I have to use another brand as the main network router and the TC is in bridge or static IP mode. I am fairly sure if the TC is the cause of the problem doing this will fix it.
As a test.. could you please factory reset the TC and this time do not use PPPOE.. set it to DHCP.. which will of course fail to pickup an address.. so internet won't work.. but I am interested to see if wireless will connect normally.
It is interesting problem.. certainly not one I have ever seen.. I will need to take some time to do a setup where I can reproduce your configuration more closely. So that could take me half a day or more.. don't expect another reply soon.. although one of the other guys here.. I will ask them if they have any ideas.. let me assure you.. this is pretty unusual.

How and what type of vpn are you using?
I would also like to see what actual IP the wireless is getting.. from your screenshots it is showing PPPOE has connected.. could this be vpn at work?? Particularly important is the wireless is picking up an IP of 10.0.1.x and the gateway address (apple for some unknown reason call it router) is 10.0.1.1
Try disconnecting the PPPOE.. and give wireless a static address with these settings.
10.0.1.200
subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway and DNS 10.0.1.1
Tell me what happens then.
Thank you for all your help guys, but I was able to spend my evening on the phone with some Apple dude and we eventually got it working. I honestly wish I could tell you exactly what was wrong, but after the second (third?) factory reset, it kinda fixed itself? Everything looks the same, but, it's working, so I have no clue. I'm just gonna run with it and not question it too much.

Ok.. I recruited someone else to have a look.. but he was as lost as I was.. and due to your rather unusual setup also could not easily reproduce it.
It would be nice to know what was going on.. but when people complain about suggestions to do factory reset after factory reset I can point them back here.. you can never have a factory reset too many!!
I have this exact same issue happening. I have had the same setup (Modem, TC) through several moves and providers. The issue only just started this last move with comcast. They, nor Motorola (modem) will help troubleshoot any further than a reset and each hand blames the other. The only way I could get it to work was to pull an old router out and put it between the modem and TC. Speeds suffer but at least it's wifi. I am very interested if anyone gets this issue figured out.
