Shortcut for highlighting text?

I often need to highlight words/phrases in a Pages document, I find the process extremely cumbersome. I'm wondering if there's an easier way to do it that I haven't uncovered.

Currently, I select the text to be highlighted. In the format section, I choose Style, the little dropdown w/the gear (next to bold, italics, underline); click on the color wheel in the text background section, and then choose a color. That's an awful lot of steps to do each time I want to highlight.

Is there an easier way to do this? I'd love to set up a keyboard shortcut for this but since there doesn't seem to be a menu item for highlighting, I don't know if it's possible.

Thank you!

I've attached some screenshots of how it works. It's part of the Track Changes set up so it's different from a typical highlighting method like you might see in Word or Evernote, but it's similar to what you see in Dropbox Paper or Google Drive in that you can both highlight and add comments. Depending on how you use highlights, it can be extremely useful. You can change the default color from yellow, but that changes the highlight color throughout the entire document. So, if you want to use multiple colors for highlighting the same document, your best option is probably creating a new paragraph style like VikingOSX mentioned. Hope that helps.User uploaded fileUser uploaded fileUser uploaded file

You have three choices:

  1. Your current process
  2. Create a new paragraph style named Highlight
    1. Assign keyboard shortcut in Paragraph panel.
    2. Save in a template for future use.
  3. Keep your yellow highlight in a separate Pages document
    1. Format menu : Copy Style (option+cmd+C) in source document.
    2. Format menu : Paste Style (option+cmd+V) in current document's selected text to receive highlight.

That is it. No shortcuts, until Apple wises up that this is so stupid on the Advanced Options menu. As it has been nearly four years, Apple is slow to understand user productivity requirements.

Spenstar:

Sorry, I didn't see this before, although apparently others missed it as well. But, I'm confused as to how this shortcut or Insert>Highlight works. How do you modify the color? When I tried to use it, the highlight defaulted to a very pale yellow color. Yet in the Format panel, choosing Style, the little dropdown w/the gear (next to bold, italics, underline), shows that there isn't a highlight color.

If I try to change the highlight from the pale yellow, it appears the color is changed behind the yellow. The yellow remains and small bands on the top & bottom of the yellow highlight show the color that I've chosen to change (pink).

This makes me think that the pale yellow highlight isn't the same as a regular highlight. Is it possible to change this color or to choose another default? Even choosing another default wouldn't necessarily work for me as I often use multiple highlight colors in a document.

I appreciate that you've pointed this out to me, but I need a better understanding as to how this works.

Thank you!

Well, that's disappointing. I was truly hoping there was an easy work around that I didn't know about or an easy keyboard shortcut I could set up. I don't work w/styles, I've always found them cumbersome. That might not really be the case but most documents I create are fairly straight forward so except for a bit of highlighting or something similar, I've never bothered learning how to use styles.

Thanks very much for you suggestions. It's hard to believe Apple still hasn't simplified some of the basic tasks in Pages.

I need to evaluate it so as to determine if the way it is set up will serve my purpose. Most of my documents are not shared and I don't have a need for "regular" track changes. It's probably because I do so little document sharing that I don't like Track Changes.

I have multiple non-shared documents, both in Pages & Numbers, that need various areas highlighted and in more than one color. I know how to accomplish that directly using the Format pane but there are a lot of steps involved and I've been hoping there was an easier way to do this.

That is why I will "evaluate" the highlighting function in Track Changes but based on spenstar3's initial posting, it doesn't appear to meet my needs.
