iPhone 6 Plus randomly stopped working

Let me start out by saying I have had my iPhone 6 Plus in a otter box since the day I bought it because of past experiences with phones. I have been having problems with my iPhone 6 Plus for a few months now. Many times a day my phone would randomly freeze and the screen would turn black. It did not matter if I clicked my home screen or lock button nothing would happen and the only way to get it to work again was if I hard reset it. This would happen multiple times a day but after I reset it, it would work fine until it happens again. Today however, I was sending a text when it happened again. The phone screen went black and nothing happened. After plugging in my phone charger and it showing the charging symbol for over 30 minutes my phone never turned on. When I unplugged my charger it showed the charging screen, then the screen went black and since then it wont charge, turn on, or even hard reset. I just got back from Sprint today and the store tech is claiming that the phone wont turn on due to it being "bent" and broke many things(did not tell me exactly what) were broken when it was "bent"in the circuit board... I told him about me having it in my case since the day I bought it and he said my case may have not done a good job... he then tried to tell me I have an upgrade and dropped the discussion about my phone being "bent" and tried to get me to just upgrade my phone. I am completely disappointed with the way this situation at the store was handle and feel like I am bring screwed over... My only options that I were told was even with my insurance that I have paid $11 a month for for 2 years, equaling over $200, is to pay the $200 deductible to get a new phone which then I have to trade in, or just trade it in broken and get next to nothing for. I was heavily pressured at 2 stores to just upgrade and trade in my phone for nothing which has brought me on here to ask why I am getting screwed over and why did I pay over $200 for warranty for the 2 years I have had my phone just to have to pay more to get it fixed... this may be my last time with Sprint and Apple as I feel like I am being used and heavily screwed over.

Greetings jacobgreenaway,

Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities with this information. I understand a few pieces of factual information that I want to make sure that I understood correctly:

  • Sprint, the wireless carrier, advised you that the issue was caused by the bending of the iPhone 6 Plus.
  • The iPhone 6 Plus lost power and displayed the battery icon for 30 minutes after leaving it plugged in and charging.
  • You have paid $11.00 a month to your wireless carrier for 24 months and are now asked to pay the $200 deductible to get the iPhone fixed.

It is important to note that the manufacturer, Apple, and the carrier, Sprint, both offer insurance plans. Please review AppleCare+ for the iPhone, provided by Apple. AppleCare+ - iPhone - Apple It's available in the first 60 days of any new iPhone purchase.

Based off of this information that you've provided I believe the best option for you would be to upgrade your device as suggested at the two stores.

I do not want to upgrade now as the new iPhone will be coming out soon as expected and planned on upgrading to that. It would be one thing if my phone stopped working after taking it out of my pocket but to be using it in my hand and then stop working and being told it stopped functioning because the phone "bent" was rather sketchy. I am going to take it to a licensed apple repair tech to get another opinion as I feel very shady about what I was told today. Sprint is claiming to fix the "bend" that broke the parts in my phones circuit board and is creating it to not power on and charge is more then the $200 deductible. In my opinion, I do not understand how Apple could be okay with there product being so un durable. I have had a 6 and multiple 6 pluses in the last 4 years and never once have I had a iPhone "bend", especially when I paid for a top of the line otter box case and the phone never left the case. It looks like I will be taking my business to another phone company if I cannot get this situation resolved reasonably.

I agree with your move to have it checked out at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. But keep in mind that I've seen previous occasions where because of issues with an Otterbox case (or sometimes because of errors by the user putting it in the case) it has ended up with a bent phone (and not just iPhones).

The the Apple Store/AASP both agree it is bent and you do not want to do an out-of-warranty repair to fix it your best bet would be to find a 3rd party repair shop with a jig that can straighten the case and they can do board level solder work. Be sure to get an estimate before committing to this, it may be higher than the replacement.
