Apple Watch (Gen 1) Screen fell off

I purchased my Apple Watch (stainless steel) in June of 2015. Being a near $800 Watch, saying it's been well cared for is an understatement. The Watch has ... no scratches or dents, never been dropped, or exposed to water. While working at my desk at work I noticed the screen dangling from the Watch housing. I took the Watch to a local Apple Store, and they sent it to Apple for further review. After a couple of days they called and refused to fix the Watch because they claimed the screen fell off because of "accidental damage" and the device was "out of warranty."

Does this look like a Watch with accidental damage??

Apple's reputation of quantity craftsmanship has always been the justification for the premium price tag, but should we expect hardware to "fall apart" for no apparent reason after only 24 months?

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

From a fellow San Diegan to Richard from San Diego,

The exact same thing happend to me last October when I was in Spain, and I had to chat online with Apple Support Spain especially since my 1-year warranty was going to run out before I returned in late October to sunny SD. The online guy made sure to put in the notes that I had contacted Apple before the warranty was up, so that I’d be covered when I returned.

I then made an appointment with the Apple Store in UTC, and fully expected to have to “defend” myself when I went in.

Lo and behold, the “genius” took one look at my AW and said, it was a known issue with 1st gen AW whereby the battery swells up and pushes the screen off. With no questions asked, he simply took my AW and ordered a replacement which I received within a week or so. Not a 1st gen but the next generation, whatever it’s called.

I hope you’re having the same luck today as I did.

Brand new watch one week old .

Go to work and look at my watch To see what time it is and there is no screen on it .

Hadn’t a clue where it fell off as id been to a fair few jobs that morning .

Went into the Apple shop and they didn’t give a toss just said because you haven’t got the screen couldn’t do anything . How the **** do they expect you to find a small screen like that. Should off not fell out in the first place looks like it’s £360 down the pan .

Going to see trading standers tomorrow as it’s not on

Will not be letting this matter go

I, like you, take exceptional care of my electronic devices. I quit wearing my 1st gen apple watch (38 mm with Milanese loop.) I began wearing one of my traditional Omega watches again and had not worn the apple watch in about two months. I picked it up from my dresser last night and the face had become detached since last wearing it. The face was dangling by the ribbon cable. How in the world did that happen? Am I to understand that apple is charging about half what the watch costs to simply re-attach the face to the case? If so, they can count me as a former watch customer from now on.

My Gen 1 sport 38mm watch had the same problem. The lower part of the touchscreen detached from its base. I have an appointment made with genius bar this Saturday. Let's see what they say. Someone mentioned Apple extended warranty on some models of Gen 1 watch but I can't find an official link to the policy. I might have to show it to the Apple store.

Well. Same here. First i broke two screens on iwatch one by dropping it 2 feel on wooden floor (hanks to poorly though through bracelet locking mechanism). The cost of repairing the screen was more than half the watch at that point - that one is still in my closet. Then the screen cane off on series 2 a month after warrNty expired. They would not fix it and asked 249 usd to swap. Just insanity. I told them if this is the case it this the last i watch I or anybody in family buys - they didn't care one bit. Two fully working iwatches in the draw and no more of this nonsense service. Thank you Apple.

I am so glad you had a positive experience. Unfortunately neither Apple Customer Service nor the Apple store representative offered me that option. In fact when I requested it and referenced the on line discussion about the battery he outright rejected my appeal and refused to give me any recovery other than to pay for the $200 repair or as he said "invest in a new watch since the prices had come down and it made more sense as an investment." I am very pro Apple but this was a horrid experience and the rep was unrelenting. Maybe they just didn't like me or there is some algorithm for their offering a replacement that I didn't qualify for. Either way it is a serious blemish on their reputation but I am only one customer. Thanks for sharing.

This just happened to me while my baby stretched herself in my arms. One stretch and my watch screen popped off. To say I’m disappointed by what I’m reading here is an understatement. I have treated my watch with care and rely on it for many things. Now I have a choice of paying out near the cost of a new watch to have it repaired. Unacceptable. Anyone try super-glue? (I know, no polls allowed... relax, it’s a joke. Or is it?

I'm going to talk to a "genius" today at the Apple Store having been granted an audience. (Do they charge for a visit?) I paid right at $1200 for mine with tax, license, dealer prep, and options, and that's been barely 2 years ago. Now the screen is dangling. Are we taking bets on what they'll say? I'm betting they can offer me a solution for around $1200. Given that it's Apple, did they designate the bands on the earlier generation watches "obsolete"? I wouldn't be surprised at all. I may have to go back to that Swatch that I've had for 30 years and paid about $30 for. I'll sure as heck not give them any more money. Done with giving them money. Period.
