Apple Watch (Gen 1) Screen fell off

I purchased my Apple Watch (stainless steel) in June of 2015. Being a near $800 Watch, saying it's been well cared for is an understatement. The Watch has ... no scratches or dents, never been dropped, or exposed to water. While working at my desk at work I noticed the screen dangling from the Watch housing. I took the Watch to a local Apple Store, and they sent it to Apple for further review. After a couple of days they called and refused to fix the Watch because they claimed the screen fell off because of "accidental damage" and the device was "out of warranty."

Does this look like a Watch with accidental damage??

Apple's reputation of quantity craftsmanship has always been the justification for the premium price tag, but should we expect hardware to "fall apart" for no apparent reason after only 24 months?

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

From a fellow San Diegan to Richard from San Diego,

The exact same thing happend to me last October when I was in Spain, and I had to chat online with Apple Support Spain especially since my 1-year warranty was going to run out before I returned in late October to sunny SD. The online guy made sure to put in the notes that I had contacted Apple before the warranty was up, so that I’d be covered when I returned.

I then made an appointment with the Apple Store in UTC, and fully expected to have to “defend” myself when I went in.

Lo and behold, the “genius” took one look at my AW and said, it was a known issue with 1st gen AW whereby the battery swells up and pushes the screen off. With no questions asked, he simply took my AW and ordered a replacement which I received within a week or so. Not a 1st gen but the next generation, whatever it’s called.

I hope you’re having the same luck today as I did.

Similar problem here with my Gen 1 watch face lifting. I have a Genius Bar appointment this Friday but with my watch being 2 years and 8 months old and being out of Apple care suspect I will get the standard answer. Ironically I purchased a similar watch for the Granddaughter and she had a similar problem after 2 years and 5 months. Sounds like a systemic problem.

I have a work around until my repair appointment by scotch taping the face to the body and the watch is still functioning. This was not recommended by Apple.

I have had the same experience. I have had my watch for 1 year and 1 month exactly before it broke. I have the 1st series 38mm aluminum watch. I was sitting at work and noticed that the screen had become unglued. I was not doing anything rigorous at the time. I use my watch at swork and I wear it to the gym, although I have always been very careful with it, it doesn’t even have a scratch on it. I have never dropped it nor do I sleep in it. The watch still works but the wires and hardware is exposed. When I called Apple they told me it would be $200 dollars to fix. I just paid $300 dollars for the watch and it’s only a year old! Also, it just needs to be re-glued! Forget it, this is the first and last Apple Watch that’s I will ever purchase.

This is exactly the same situation I had. I was sitting at my desk at work and noticed that the screen was suddenly detached. I have only had my watch (Nike version - 2nd generation I think - 38mm) for 4 months and I have never gotten it wet or dropped it. I was shocked when Apple sent it for repair and I was told it was found to have been accidentally damaged. There are not even any scratches on it. I would think there could be accidental damage in simply shipping a product with out a connected screen if that is the case. I don't typically buy Apple care because I am careful with my devices and the devices are usually of good quality hardware-wise. I am shocked and upset about this. It may be the end of my relationship with Apple products. This is unacceptable.

Same thing happened to my watch. Stainless Steel also. Never been dropped and hardly even worn...and never near or in water. I took my watch into Apple in April to get it repaired because by screen just fell open and dangled from the cord...watch still works flawlessly btw. Apple “Genuises” told me it would be $200+ to swap my watch out! 18 months and a $700 Watch is now useless unless I pay even more money. There are too many people with the same issue for it to not be a manufacturer error!

I just had that happen to me literally 2 hours ago. I was sitting down at a table and noticed my watch screen was hanging. Just took it into the store that sold it to me and said it had no physical damages so they sent it off to one of the repair companies and I should get it back in 10- 14 working days. My watch is the sport version gen 1 and have had it now for a year and 9 months so should be in decent condition.

Apples products are poorly made. It just happened to my wife’s watch the screen came off and ripped the ribbon cables and she has no idea how or where it happened. $300+ down the drain, you would think the richest company in the world would make products that are worth the money they charge for them

Now I am expecting an email saying my comments cannot be posted because I dared to call apple out

This just happened to me with my Apple 1st gen. watch. It’s a rose gold aluminum watch. I love this watch I would buy a new one but they don’t sell this colour anymore. We just got to Maui yesterday and today after we left the restaurant after dinner I lifted my arm and noticed that the watch face was lifted and only held on by the wire that seems to be attached to the battery I think. Crazy thing is that is it working.

Mine did the same thing, 14 months after purchase. I have the stainless steel case as well. I had mine on the charger, put it on and look down and the screen is dangling. Apple said the same thing when I brought it in, they eyeballed it and said the battery wasn't swollen and the screen went back in place so must have been external damage. Maybe when they lose enough customers they will admit they have a problem. Not happy!

Had the same issue with my watch. The screen pop off.

Went to the Apple Store and they wanted to charge me $199.

I asked if the battery was swollen and they said no. The screen is working, so I wonder how they will use the 199 dollars. Is adhesive really that expensive? I refused to pay 199 dollars.

Dear Apple, you might have "saved" 199 dollars here but you lost a couple thousand from me in the future.

Thanks for the info, glad they are taking care of your friend's watches as they should. Did any of the problem watches have swollen batteries? My rep said they cover those but mine wasn't swollen, screen just popped off, my guess is the adhesive fails after about 14 months. Might be related to the stainless cases, I've noticed a lot of posts with SS case watches.
