Can the iPhone 6S Plus camera be used to capture video of the solar eclipse without a filter?

I've been seeing mixed feedback about the use of the iPhone to capture the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. Is it true the phone can be used without a filter to capture images/video without damage to the phone, or is this information false?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 10.3.3

The issue really is the quality of the image. Without a filter, it will not be a very good image and is likely to full of glare/flare and other artifacts.

Just as you cannot take a good picture of the sun when there is no eclipse (the camera sensor will be so overloaded with incoming light all you photograph is a massive light bloom), you cannot get much of a good one when there is an eclipse without some sort of filter. A polarizing filtering works well with DSLR camera lenses for sun shots. But otherwise, your cell phone camera's digital sensor will be so saturated it won't be much of a picture at all.
