apple mail doesn't stop sending out of office rule

Because of my holiday I added a rule in apple mail as a "out of office mail".

When I came back I first unchecked this rule and later deleted this rule.

I quit mail after this and restarted my macbook.

There are now no rules visible in apple mail - preferences - rules......but apple mail is still sending the out of office mails!

How can I stop mail from sending these automatic replies?

MacBook, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Thanks again for your extensive replies.

After deleting the trash...the spooky out of office came back again.

After inactivating the Icloud IMAP (in mail preferences)....it finally stopped...so apparently that was causing the problem!

Won't use mail on Icloud anymore....

Will probably use the possibility my provider is offering.

Thanks a lot for your time and patience!

The files will rebuild themselves when you start mail again. The reason for deleting them was to get rid of any corruption that may have occurred.

The files in the trash should not influence the application itself, but you have to quit Mail before removing the files. I'm not sure what happened in your case.

Rules in Mail can sometimes be a little glitchy sometimes. For an Out of Office Response, rules should work. However, usually the providers website has a vacation response settings there. For Apple email, go to iCloud.com website and log in there with your apple id. In Mail preferences there, you can set your vacation response there. Should be the same for others such as ATT, Gmail, etc. Since you are setting it directly at the server site, you would insure a better response since you will not be relying on a computer or another mail program with rules which have to download an unread message to implement them.

For mail programs, apple mail is a good basic in my opinion, but there are many others such as Outlook. If you need a more complex program, then you will just have to look around an find one that suits all of your needs.

I would want to verify which computer is causing the problem. It was a rule created, so deleting an account may not fix the problem. It would probably return when you add the account back.

I would first disable the account on the computer where the rule was created and see if that stops the vacation response. If it does, you can go from there.

In Mail preferences, Account tab, then Account information> uncheck Enable this account.

Dear Glenn,....I'v tested again on all the devices.....but got completely fed up with it all.

So I decided to delete the accounts on apple mail and completely abort apple mail.

Installed outlook for mac now......

Thanks a lot for all your help....no more spooky out of office mails anymore I hope..... Big apple mail fail though! It's a shame...am an Apple fan.

Funnily enough last week I DID delete the 3 files at both computers....but "magically" they were back when I looked again today! (How is this possible?)

Then I deletede them again...still the same problem occured.....now I've emptied my trashcan on both computers, now the problem seems to be gone.....pffff.....

Is it possible that files in the trash still influence what happens? (apparently it is!).

What is the best way to add an out of office message to my email? I don't want to encounter this problem again. Is there a possibility in apple mail? Or should I use another mailprogram on my macs....if so...which one would you recommend?

Thanks so far Glenn! I was getting desperate (I run my company on my macs...).

Yes it's the rule that announces that I'm on a holiday for a certain time and won't read my mail....so I know I installed that,...can't remember the details, since it was about 6 weeks ago.

I've got a macbook air and a macbook pro. On both devices all rules have been deleted (part from the standard apple rule). I Also have an Iphone (but do'nt know how to install rules on there, so can't have done that). How do I go to the webmail?????

For apple mail, it's iCloud.com. In settings, there is a Vacation Response.

For other providers, you will have to go to their website.

For your computers, you will probably need to eliminate which is causing the problem. You may have to open Mail preferences and disable the account on one device and test on the other until you verify which is the cause. Then you can work on it from there.

Thanks Glenn for your help, but I feel like a real dumbo not knowing how to do that (but maybe that's why I am an Apple-user, you don't need to understand how it works to be able for it to work! ;-) )

How do I disable the account (on one computer?).....and how do I go further?

PS. Could it be a virus-type thing? (I happen to have opened an infected link on facebook)
