Reset Password Failed

I have not logged into my laptop for a few months. Today I am looking for a document. When I try to log in, I keep getting an error message.

There was an error communicating with iCloud.

I then try restarting and resetting the password, but it is not working. Should I reset on my iCloud pw from my iMac?

I know my internet is working. What are my options? Thank you.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Shut down the computer and enter into recovery mode by pressing command + R + power key simultaneously don’t release the keys until apple logo appears on the desktop , a bar will start loading , let it be completed .Select English language and click on right arrow .

Take cursor on top menu bar , click on Utilities again click on terminal type a command resetpassword and click on enter key on the keyboard .

Select a user ( press forcefully on the trackpad ) to reset the password and options will be shown ( a ) exit ( b) next .

Click on next an option will be shown enter the password for Apple ID , so you have to enter the password of your Apple ID .

Again click on next .

Options will be shown reset password .

New password ……

Verify password …..

Password hint …….

Enter the new password you have thought in the above fields , password hint field is optional .

Again click on next .

Your user account password has been reset . You may reboot and sign in using your new password .

Click on restart , the machine will restart after few minutes ..

You will see various passwords like accountsd want your keychain access and will prompt to enter new passwords and it won’t accept .

Click on cancel , then a new pop - up again cancel , cancel ...

Restart your machine and open Keychain Access via spotlight .

Press command + comma to open its preferences and click on reset my default keychain .

A new keychain will be created in user library > keychain folder and your old keychain will be deactivated .

Now , the most important is you must have 4 digit I cloud verification code that is constant for a user in records .

Open system preferences > internet account > check the box of mail a window will appear , enter your password for web mail ( can be gmail or yahoo ….) to get it configured .

Again click on I cloud , you will see the keychain box is unchecked , check it after few minutes a pop up will come on the desktop to enter 4 digit I cloud verification code , so you have enter it and click on ok ..

Be patient after few minutes an sms will come to your registered mobile ( that would be 6 digit ) , so enter it .

You will observe the keychain box is configured .

If you are using air port express , open it with the help of spotlight , click on base station your base station is empty , click on edit and enter your base station or wireless network password ( both are kept as same generally ) , as base station password should be filled up always for security purpose .

I have tested this procedure two times on my computer and it worked .

Note : The most important role was of 4 digit iCloud verification code and all passwords that were safely written in records .

Please try this method and hope so , it can help you .

Are you able to boot the computer? When are you getting the iCloud error message?

What password did you reset?

Since you didn't get a password prompt, don't change the password yet.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

If the computer boots and then you are getting the iCloud error, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
