Zerwas was correct, however, that only works once per folder because you can't have the same name twice as a folder or a file inside the same folder or on the desktop.. you can do his method and use alternate spaces or multiple numbers of spaces of varying lengths if you have several folders you want to hide.
That method however does you a dis-service if you like to use Spotlight, because then the folders will nolonger be found by an intelligible name.. so you can either call up file info on the folders and put their original names in the spotlight comments box, or you can try one of my favorite tricks for hiding files or folders:
If you don't use color labels on files or folders normally, this may work for you. Make the background of the window (or desktop) where the files you want hidden are black.. the names will disappear completely as the default color is black.. then just open file info on the remaining files and folders that you don't want hidden and set their color to the last setting (grey) and they will reappear with inverted text over the black. This way you won't have to mess around to get spotlight to find the files, and you can still type the first two or three letters of the file or folder in its own window to select it (provided you know what the name is).. the other thing is, if you forget where it is or what it was called, just drag a selection rectangle over the whole window and when all the files are high-lighted, the hidden one(s) will be revealed as well.
