Go to your carrier and ask them for a correct sim.
We never had a SIM card in this phone since we have gotten it, does that matter?
It is not possible to activate an iPhone without one.
Ok I took the SIM card out and put it back in and now it says no sim, does that mean it's just not working still

This means your iPhone is locked to another network provider use a simcard from them or ask them to remove the simlock only they can do this.
