Double sound alerts for new text messages. Repeat alert set to never

Even though I haven't made any changes to the settings for at least 6 months, for the last few weeks I am getting two sound alerts for text messages that come through. I get the first one when the actual text comes through and the second one as soon as I open the Apple Messages App. This could be few seconds later or hours later when I actually open the Messages App to read the text message.

I use the Note/Ding sound for My Messages alert. I've tried turning the alert sound off and on and changing the alert sound to a different one and back again. Setting it to multiple notification and then back to Never. It's still doing the same thing.

Please help me get rid of this new annoying glitch.
