Everything has slowed down

Recently virtually all internal functions on the Mac mini have slowed down--the beach ball is ubiquitous. I know of no known changes made, My internet DL/UL speed is good. I ran CleanmyMac and deleted all the junk, but it made no difference.

Here are snapshots of my Activity Monitor. I'm not a hi tech guy. Any and all suggestions would be welcome.

Looking at your latest etrecheck list:

1. remove all entries in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->éLoginItems, with the minus sign under the list.

Then restart the mac: uninstalling software when it is running is mostly incomplete.

2. If you are are heavy user of Dropbox, you can put it in the LoginItmes again.

The rest stays out. Then, before anything else:

3. there is a s**t leftover from MacPaw CleanMyMac (because it was running when you uninstalled it).

In Finder, select the Homefolder (yourname) on the left,

then select the GO menu and hold the Alt(option) key,

select Library,

in Library open the LaunchAgents folder,

delete the ....macpaw.CleanMyMac....plist.

Then restart again.

that should do it.

If you feel uncertain, make a new etrecheck list afterwards and post it

btw: you are not old, not at all.

Thanks.

I performed all the tasks you assigned, I believe successfully. Here is the latest EC Report which still shows below average performance, and I finally got a SMART report--but don't know what it means.

The SMART report should look similar to this post

<https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7896679?answerId=31532314022#31532314022>

Did you get something like that. Or when you say "Nothing happened", do you mean there was nothing displayed?

If you look at the link I provided, I would be looking for SMART entries about

  • Raw_Read_Error_Rate
  • Seek_Error_Rate
  • Hardware_ECC_Recovered
  • and any other items that indicate the disk is experiencing errors. Each manufacture has different names for things, but they can generally be figured out if it is reporting errors. Also the RAW column is in the thousands, if not millions.

I wouldn't be concerned about that Barry. If your Mac's performance is acceptable, then you're finished.

There are some User Login items that indicate the apps it wants to launch automatically when you log in are in the Trash. That's harmless but you can fix those "errors" by going to (Apple menu) > System Preferences... > Users & Groups. Select your Account, then the Login Items tab. Select the item(s) that you do not want to launch automatically and click the [—] (minus) button. Doing so does not delete the apps themselves; it merely prevents them from launching automatically when you log in to your Mac.

One more comment:

Physical disk: (null) 999.86 GB (459.23 GB free)

I do not know the implications of that, or if it is anything you need to act upon. I surmise it is a mounted Time Machine sparsebundle volume, which might be appearing on your Mac's Desktop as a generic "optical disc drive" icon like this

User uploaded file

Do you see anything like that on your Mac's Desktop? The only reason for asking is to be sure Time Machine is backing up to a directly connected hard disk drive and not a "virtual disk". Only EtreCheck's developer could definitively address that uncertainty.

If an icon resembling the picture above is on your Desktop, select it, then select File > Eject... Then, please confirm Time Machine is continuing to back up as usual by selecting Back Up Now from the Time Machine icon in your Mac's menu bar and let it finish.

I've extracted from the SMART report those lines that I would look at to see if the drive was throwing errors.

The very last column, "RAW VALUE", is where you would see long term accumulated counts.

As you can see, all these error related events have 0 (Zero) counts, so from the SMART report, your drive appears to be "Good"

When there is a failing drive, I have seen in reports from other users, where the RAW VALUE numbers are in the millions for 1 or more of the above fields. That is "NOT" your problem. You have all zeros. Your disk is looking good! 🙂

Suggest removing CleanMyMac as well. It is frequently responsible for Mac performance problems, as well as sometimes deleting things that it shouldn't, breaking macOS functionality.

Many of the long time forum volunteers suggest No anti-virus packages, No Mac cleaners, No memory cleaners.

StartupItems no longer function. They do nothing now, but you may want to clean up. If there are apps associated with these StartupItems, you might want to see if they have an uninstaller to cleanly get rid of all bits. If not, you can use

Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Library/StartupItems/

to manually remove the items.

EtreCheck is a tool that helps Apple Support Community volunteers debug problems without any access to the troubled computers. Debugging problems can be a difficult task even when the machine is in front of you. Attempting it via a discussion forum is extremely difficult. EtreCheck is a great help that regards.

It is also possible, your Mac mini disk is getting too old. If you also want to click on the [Show SMART report] when you collect the EtreCheck report, that would show the health of your disk.

Bob, thanks. Hopefully I am doing it right.

Here is the current EtreCheck report. I have removed all Avast, Symantec, Trusteer, and CleanMyMac Applications and files. The performance still shows below average. I'm ready for the next step ----or is it really complicated? At my age, do you think I am capable?

Aug 30, 2017 8:41 PM in response to Barry Glasgal

Sure, but please understand that any Mac that has ever been affected by any non-Apple "cleaning" product should no longer be considered reliable. Those products are destructive in nature. It's what they do and how they work. The first thing I do with a Mac that has been affected by such products is to erase it. I have learned that is the most expedient solution requiring the least amount of time and constant interaction.

Also please understand that as a rule I do not modify my Macs with any non-Apple system modifications, other than to duplicate what others have done to theirs so that I can help fix them. After I do that, I completely erase the affected Mac and restore it from its Time Machine backup.

The good news is that you appear to have a viable and recent Time Machine backup. That is an essential prerequisite for troubleshooting an ailing Mac, and you already took care of that.

Short of completely erasing that Mac and reconfiguring it from the ground up as if it were brand new, you are welcome to methodically erase the nonessential junk preventing it from working.

I suggest the following sequence:

The key is to use its "Uninstaller" app on the CleanMyMac product itself.

To remove CleanMyMac 3 itself, use its Uninstaller module, followed by these additional steps:

Remove the file ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

  • To navigate to that file, copy and paste the following line into the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder...

~/Library/LaunchAgents/

  • Locate the following file and drag it to the Trash:
  • com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

    • Then, open  (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
    • Select the item CleanMyMac3 Menu
    • Click the [—] (minus) button.
    • Restart your Mac.

After all that effort, evaluate your Mac's performance. If you decide it's acceptable, you're finished.

If you decide the above is too much work then I recommend completely erasing the Mac, and reconfiguring it. Please write back if you want those instructions.
