can't find sources list for ipod

I'm trying to remove old music/podcasts from an old iPod nano and would also like to update the software, but I can't follow the directions in the online manual to find the Sources List in iTunes. They say to then go to Summary and then to update or restore. On my desktop, the iTunes listing for that (connected) iPod shows the old music but when I click the iPod's icon on my screen, I see the list of new music I want to add. Can't drag or delete the old songs, can't drag the new ones. Any ideas?

Hello cynsalz,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that when trying to add new music to your iPod nano, you're unable to manually add or remove music. I'm happy to help with this issue.

Please follow the steps in the section "If you can't manually add or remove content from your device" in the link below:
Move content from iTunes on your computer to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Please let us know if the issue persists and include any other troubleshooting steps may have tried.

Have a wonderful day!

To add further to Joe's post, if you are using Sync to manage your iPod, you cannot drag-and-drop from iTunes to the iPod. Instead, you let iTunes synchronise with the iPod and you use the Sync Music options to control what goes onto, or is taken off of, the iPod.

So the first question is: do you use Sync or Manually Manage to control your iPod?

If you use Sync, check the screenshots below:

which takes you to this screen:

User uploaded file

Then click on the Music pane, as shown below:

User uploaded file

and then choose your preferred options shown on the right hand side, such as Sync Music/Entire Library or as indicated in the screenshot, Sync Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres. If you select the latter, you the choose specific items from the lists below that (such as ~ Bring Up The Mood, ~ Radio and ~ Ultima #2) as I have.
