My 2.4ghz on my AirPort Time Capsule 802.11ac is not working / working correctly.

My Rime Capsule has been great, but in the last 2 weeks. I think 2.4ghz is not working Properly. Sometimes my ssid is visible, but connectivity to it does not work reliably. Almost as if I have a hardware fault on the 2.4ghz.

thoughts? I’m running 7.7.8 and have for a a long time.

A full factory reset is worthwhile.. but if it doesn't work then replacement is the next step.

Warranty replacement is possible even after normal one year, if it is less than 3 years old and you have applecare on a computer or iPad or appleTV. If it is less than 2 years old then it is still possible to get applecare on one of those products if you don't already and apple will replace the TC.

It is a bit unusual for one band to go bad.. but the AC model Airports are no more reliable than previous ones, and often much less.. so if it is older than 3 years replacement is best way forward. It is possible to keep the TC just for wired backups.. or over wireless from whatever new router you buy, so the TC even semi-faulty could still be usable.. with somewhat less trust in it.

Read with great care the applecare document for your MBA.

It might depend on where you are in the world. And the particulars at the time you purchased the applecare.

I know this discussion has come up before that Apple were refusing support for accessories even when purchased at the same time.. In which case consumer law is on your side.. because you bought extended warranty which is not being honoured.

I dug out the applecare doc for US.

APP Mac - North America English

specifics you need..

3.2 Covered Equipment

In addition to the Apple-branded product and accessories contained in the original packaging, “Covered Equipment” includes the following according to your Plan:

ℹ Under APP for Mac, (a) one compatible Apple-branded display if purchased at the same time as the Covered Equipment, (b) an Apple-branded mouse, Magic Trackpad, Apple Battery Charger and keyboard if included with the Covered Equipment (or purchased with a Mac mini or Mac Pro), or (c) an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, AirPort Time Capsule, Apple memory modules (RAM) and Apple USB SuperDrive if used with the Covered Equipment and originally purchased by you no earlier than two years before the Covered Equipment purchase.

(ii) Under APP for Apple TV, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station and AirPort Time Capsule if used with the Covered Equipment and originally purchased by you no earlier than two years before the Covered Equipment purchase.

If Apple are not honouring their warranty and applecare protection agreement.. take them to the consumer protection authority in your country.

The cover is stated clearly in the document.

Unfortunately Apple have occasionally needed some help in reading their fine print.

Hi,

Sorry to dispute what you are saying, but I have a faulty AirPort Extreme which is slightly over one year old and a MacBook Air which was bought at the same time, with AppleCare.

Apple today refused to honour or accept any warranty claim on the Airport Extreme. They advised me to return the router to the retailer I bought it from and take up a claim under consumer law.

I rang as a last ditch effort to try and get the device repaired before having to buy another router, after reading similar claims on other websites.

So from recent experience I would say that this is not correct information.

Best regards.

Thanks for your reply, I'm in the U.K.

I've been told categorically today by AppleCare in Ireland that they will not be honouring any warranty claims on this device. I think the gist of your final point is basically leading to what Apple want me to do, which is seek a warranty claim under consumer law.

I didn't see the point of arguing with the customer service advisor about it, despite the unit being just over a year old. I must admit to being surprised that they didn't offer to repair it. Apple have gone above and beyond for me as a customer in the past.

I just wanted to state here from my own personal experience that having AppleCare attached to a Mac or whatever device and an Airport, has not in my case covered warranty beyond the first year. Disappointing for me personally and contrary to popular wisdom in various forums on the internet, including here.

It's a shame but with time and patience being limited, plus having lost the original receipt for the Airport, I have no further choice but to either find a solution or buy another router.

We think.. not actually stated as fact yet.. the airports are due for deletion from Apple lineup.. they may not have stock to replace it.. since they do no repairs for airports.

But your Consumer protection in UK should force them to redress you.

I think your problem with PPPOE is not just faulty airport.. I think it is more fundamental firmware issue. I answered in your other thread.

Hi Tesserax,

i have tried to to reconfigure the 2.4 ghz channels in both automatic and manual. Channels 1,6,11. Restarted the time machine, powered off the time machine. Done a wireless network survey. The 2.4 is there sometimes (comes and goes) and when trying to connect fails, though the 5ghz is working with the same password.
