Is it possible to put a Verizon SIM on a SIM free iPhone?

I am going to upgrade in several days from the iPhone 7 to the next iPhone when it is released in the next several months. Can I put a Verizon SIM card on an iPhone if I buy an iPhone 7 SIM free?

Yes. If you purchase an unlocked iPhone - that is, an iPhone that is not locked to a particular wireless carrier - you can insert the SIM card and it will work in the country where it was sold.

However, until the iPhone 8 is released, there is no way of knowing what you'll be able to do with a SIM card on it.

All Verizon phones are sold unlocked. They have been since the iPhone 5. So if you order a Verizon iPhone 8 it will be unlocked out of the box.

You cannot switch an AT&T iPhone 7 Plus to Verizon; Verizon will not accept it. Note that the 7 and 7+ come in 2 models, one for GSM only and one for GSM and CDMA. The GSM/CDMA phone only comes for Verizon and Sprint activation.

I am currently on AT&T on an iPhone 7 Plus 256GB, and for my next iPhone, I would want Verizon, and want it to ship on release date. But there will be no SIM free option, just like when the iPhone 7 was released in September. But when I preorder it several minutes late, then I would end up losing the iPhone because I may need to wait until 2018 to just get it. I am going to switch to Verizon this October.
