Hi
iPhone is not user-serviceable.
Do not turn on, use or charge your iPhone whilst moisture may be present inside it.
Contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider to have your iPhone inspected and to establish your available service options, timescales and cost:

Apple has been great to me as well. Late last year, they did a minor repair on my MBA 2011 at no charge.
Courcoul mentioned damage that necessarily has to occur because iphone is soldered/glued/sealed together
The battery is not soldered, it is a small plug inserted into a connector - it is not soldered, glued or sealed. It can be disconnected and left alone (re-connecting it in a water damaged phone is a bad idea).
Exactly how many and of which model iPhones have you personally opened and serviced?
I have opened 2 iPhone 5S in total. I have bought it water-damaged in Polish counterpart of ebay for $20-$60, learned how to open and fix it at iFixit, bought what I needed at their shop and I am a happy user. These are the only phones I have ever opened in my life (exchanging battery in Nokia 3310 does not count I suppose). And I did not damage anything.
At bare least, the adhesive strips. Plus any wires/connectors/harnesses torn by not using the factory rigs needed to do it safely.
"factory rigs"? You mean screwdriver and a suction cup, and say tweezers/proper knife? Of course it is possible to damage the phone (which I have always stated) as this is small, delicate device, but you previously stated that unless you are an expert or electronics engineer it cannot be avoided. You have written: "is nigh impossible without replacing a large number of parts". "impossible". I think I serve as a counterexample. I had no prior experience with that (I do not work in electronics industry, I am a mathematician). And iFixit guide is very detailed with good quality pictures.
Adhesive strips are under the battery. The screen is not glued (it is not i7).
Speaking of AppleCare+, cracking the iGadget open voids that too and you lose the two "accidental damage" incidents that get you a new/refurbished replacement in case of drownings and other calamities, for a $80 service charge (way below the cost of the dead device).
Can you provide a basis for that claim? I have quoted Apple General Warranty conditions, where it only says about actual damage related to third party work. Opening is not "damage".
For that $80 you are not getting your data back.
