magic keyboard numeric volume keys not working

Just connected the new magic keyboard with numeric keypads and none of the top row keys function. The volume control (f12) wipes the screen away.

There is no "Use F1, F2, etc., as standard function keys" in my keyboards preferences. Everyone keeps suggesting that but I don't have it. Yes I have the latest OS El Capitan 10.11.6

I found in the preferences to adjust the screen brightness but there is nothing for the volume! Please help.

...without suggeting "Use F1, F2, etc., as standard function keys" 🙂

It may not work correctly because your on 10.11.6 and the system requirements for the new Magic Keyboards is 10.12.4 or later.

With that in mind:

What do you see when you go to: Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts and look down thru the different sections....?

F13 and F14 are brightness controls

F11 and F12 are Show Desktop and Dashboard

F1 thru F8 are Move and Focus

Have you tried clicking Restore Defaults and selecting All Controls....?

Is 10.12.4 still El Capitan or is it Sierra or whatever the new OS is called? I cannot find an El Capitan beyond 10.11.6.

I definitely don't have 10.12 and my Mac says there are no available updates for me.

El Capitan is 10.11 and Sierra is 10.12

The Mac App Store only automatically updates the currently macOS

To get 10.12 Sierra, you have to go to the Mac App Store and upgrade to Sierra.

Is see the same things you are seeing...I reassigned the screen brightness to F1 and F2 (since that is what the keyboard shows on the keys) but there is nothing I can see to set up the volume control.

That interesting, because I'm using a non-apple Logitech Keyboard in macOS Sierra.

I'm pretty sure that volume control only works using the original keyboard.

Or possible with the Magic Keyboard and 10.12.6 Sierra.

You're welcome!

I tried restoring to defaults but it didn't help.

Thanks for the help.
