How to get custom ringtone onto iOS 11 device?

How to transfer custom ringtone with iTunes 12.7?

Apple support article says to transfer it manually "if you have ringtone in your iTunes". However in iTunes 12.7 there are no ringtones anymore and I can't find a way to transfer custom ringtone my to iPhone.

The iTunes software no longer manages tones for you, but it still lets you inspect which tones are in your phone (see screenshot above).

I got my custom ringtones back by doing the following:

1) Using finder, locate the files in the folder "Tones" under where my iTunes media library is stored

2) From within iTunes, with my iPhone connected, select "Tones" under "On My Device" (screenshot above)

3) Drag the files from (1) onto the blank area in (2) to copy them onto the phone:

4) Click "sync".

5) From my iPhone, choose Settings -> Sounds -> Ringtone: confirm that the missing custom ringtones have been restored and that my default ringtone has been automatically set back to the (now no longer missing) custom ringtone it used to have.

Note: My phone is using iOS 10.3.3; I haven't installed iOS 11 yet. But I had the same problem with "where did my custom ringtones go?" the moment I upgraded iTunes to 12.7.

If you save your M4r file to your desktop then in iTunes connect (your phone/ipad) and Tones will appear. Click on Tones to open Tones window, select file /add file to library and select your file from the opened files box. Drag and drop your M4r file from your desktop into the Tones screen. Once you have done that click on ok in the opened file box you are getting the file from and it should transfer to Tones folder automatically and also to ipad.

Worked on my ipad air fine but it has to be a .m4r or .m4a file , wont work with aac files or mp3/4.

Sorry, but for me it isn't that easy. I've been following this thread for 11 pages now and am where I started. The errant ringtone is there, it plays if I select it but not if someone calls me, it has the .m4r designation etc etc. Just amazing so many people could have this issue with so many people chiming in with "solutions" that work for some and not others yet Apple has not addressed the problem officially and conclusively. It is a clear deficiency of iOS and the iphone to make it so difficult to create custom ringtones which is something people want to do. I had the first iPhone and have had 5 newer models but with this issue am thinking whether my loyalty to the Apple envirnoment is being abused and whether it's time to look elsewhere for my next phone.

I believe there issue is a default ringtone conflict between a Mac and iPhone.

After upgrading to iTunes 12.7 and macOS 10.13 when selecting a ringtone via a Mac you can set a specific ringtone for whom you wish, however, selecting a custom ringtone via your Mac is not an option after the upgrades.

After copying your custom ringtones from ~/Music/iTunes Library/Tones/ to your iPhone you can select a custom ringtone on your iPhone. However, your Mac has a non custom default ringtone already set!
The only folder on a Mac that allows ringtones to be selected from is /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ToneLibrary.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Rin gtones and this folder does not have any custom ringtones listed.

One way to correct this would be for Apple to allow the Mac to search and identify custom ringtones on the iPhone and copy them into /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ToneLibrary.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Ri ngtones so the Mac default and iPhone ringtone default ringtones can be matched eliminating the possibility of conflicts.

After 48 hours of struggle, I finally succeed it.

I followed every tips found on internet. None of them worked.

My solution is, I downloaded "Free Any Créateur Sonnerie" from AppStore (High Sierra OSX).

This app just convert any song to the RIGHT format, meaning with the m4r extension and... the right size !

DO NOT use iTunes to converts your Tones to 30 sec of AAC. It does not work.

Once the files are saved to any folder of your choice, copy&paste (keyboard shortcuts) them to the Tones folder of iTunes.

Then click on Sync, voilà ! Go check in your iPhones.

My first guess is the file size of Tones has to be smaller than 1Mb to work.

Nope, not helpful. My "Tones" folder has all of my old ringtones in it, but none of them will work. And it won't let me drag and drop them from the "Tones" folder on my desktop.

I'm trying to get the ringtones I custom-made on my iPhone to work. They show in the Tones folder when I connect my phone, and in my Contacts, but they don't play when that person calls.

Sorry, but that didn't work, either.

All of the tones on my phone don't exist on my computer in the Tones folder in Finder. There are only 4 there, where on my phone there are 8 or 10 (maybe more). How do I get the ringtones currently on my phone into the Tones folder in the Finder so I can then move them BACK onto my phone?

As for the constant, "See Create a ringtone in iTunes" comment, it's getting old. We are NOT trying to create NEW ringtones, we are trying to USE THE ONES WE ALREADY HAVE ON OUR PHONES.

Personally, I find this whole thing insane. My ringtones have worked for as long as I've had an iPhone. Whatever "update" Apple did has screwed a lot of people. And you would think by now they would have a solution other than, "oh, well, you are on your own" and something that takes multiple steps making you remake ringtones that you have already made and had for years.

For people who aren't tech-savvy or computer experts, and even for some of us who consider ourselves to be pretty tech-savvy, this is a freaking NIGHTMARE!

After hours of trying, i finally get my iPhone 4 custom ringtones onto my new iPhone 8 Plus device!

I'm using Windows 10 64 bits with iTunes 12.7.

The method of:

"Drag and drop ringtone from Windows Explorer or Finder onto the device where it appears in the iTunes sidebar."

only worked after i changed to manual management (of videos and music) in the Summary tab.

Try this:

I’ve had the same issues as many have stated. Even though I copied the tones I have been using for years into the tones directory on my iPhone 6 when I received a call they would not override the default tone that the install of IOS 11 left me with.

I fixed that issue by going to “Settings”, “Sounds”, “Ringtone” then selected “Tone Store” and re-downloaded the same ringtone. When I selected the download I was asked if I wanted this to be my default ringtone and I said yes. Now I can set any ringtone I want as the default and all is well!!

I am happy to say I have found a solution!

First you need to make sure that you have the tone(s) dragged and dropped on the your desktop of your computer and make sure they have the correct file extension name of .m4r or else iTunes will not recognize the file as a tone and will only sync over as a music file. Editing the file name can be done when you open the file and view it's properties but in some cases when you try to edit the file manually it will not work correctly. Preferably, you would want to download it directly from the source as a .m4r file.

Second, you need to plug your iPhone into the computer and open up the iTunes summery page by tapping on the small iPhone icon in the top left hand corner. Once you are looking at the summery page scroll to the bottom and check mark the box that says "manually manage music and videos" once it is check marked let it complete the sync.

Third, drag and drop the tones from your desktop onto the iPhone through iTunes and it should add the tone onto your iPhone.

These instructions will work for people who have updated to iTunes 12.7 or newer and IOS 11.1 or newer. Hope this helps, please feel to ask any questions.

I figured out how to do this last night.

Navigate in Finder to your iTunes media folder and then find the folder for "Tones."

Next, open iTunes and find the device you want to sync the ringtones to. Go to the "Summary" section in "Settings" in the iTunes sidebar for that device. Under the "Options" section, be sure to check the box for "Manually Manage Music and Videos." Then click on the "Tones" section in "On My Device" in the iTunes sidebar.

Now go back to Finder and select the tones you want on your phone. Drag those files into the "Tones" section in iTunes (not the sidebar, but where the files should appear.) It may take a few seconds for the green plus sign to appear next to the red number of files you are transferring, but once it does, you can release your hold. The files should all now transfer and be available on your iPhone.

Tether your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes. In iTunes, click the device button (your iPhone). Look at the column to your left that reads, 'On My Device'. Its located in light grey type.

There, you will see tones. If you know where your tones are on your computer, or if you utilize Garage Band to create your own tones then you can drag the tone(s) from the location folder to the 'Tones' in iTunes.

To read about further about Tones in iTunes or to learn how to create your own tones run a search with the key words, "How do you transfer tones made in garage band to itunes 12.7?"

Best of luck!
