How to get custom ringtone onto iOS 11 device?

How to transfer custom ringtone with iTunes 12.7?

Apple support article says to transfer it manually "if you have ringtone in your iTunes". However in iTunes 12.7 there are no ringtones anymore and I can't find a way to transfer custom ringtone my to iPhone.

The iTunes software no longer manages tones for you, but it still lets you inspect which tones are in your phone (see screenshot above).

I got my custom ringtones back by doing the following:

1) Using finder, locate the files in the folder "Tones" under where my iTunes media library is stored

2) From within iTunes, with my iPhone connected, select "Tones" under "On My Device" (screenshot above)

3) Drag the files from (1) onto the blank area in (2) to copy them onto the phone:

4) Click "sync".

5) From my iPhone, choose Settings -> Sounds -> Ringtone: confirm that the missing custom ringtones have been restored and that my default ringtone has been automatically set back to the (now no longer missing) custom ringtone it used to have.

Note: My phone is using iOS 10.3.3; I haven't installed iOS 11 yet. But I had the same problem with "where did my custom ringtones go?" the moment I upgraded iTunes to 12.7.

Using iTunes 12.7.1.14 and iOS 11.1.2.

1. Your device needs to be connected to iTunes.

2. Make certain that the ringtones are already in the .m4r file type. There are numerous online converters if your files are not .m4r

3. Click and drag the wanted m4r files from a directory on your PC to the "Tones" folder on your device.

4. Sync and you're done.

I had trouble with this with iOS 11 / iPhone X and iTunes 12.7

Dragged my own m4r ringtones to the iPhone X (under Devices in iTunes) and selected 'Manually Manage Music and Videos' before I clicked 'Sync'. Sync went through but the ringtones didn't show up on the phone under Settings > Sounds and Haptics.

I got fed up and decided to drag those same ringtone files from finder window onto 'Music' (under Devices in iTunes) and synced, and voila! all the ringtone files appeared on the phone under Settings > Sounds and Haptics.

I hope this helps!

Same here! I manually dragged it into Tones, synched, saw it in my list of possible tones, but it still won't actually play when someone calls me. Also, I spent 90 minutes on the phone with three different Apple Care reps and none of them even knew about this new way Tones are handled in iTunes. I learned more in 5 minutes of reading this thread!

Yeah. I can see all of my text tones in iTunes, and iTunes states that all of the tones are on my device... But... Alas... No way to set them. When I go to put them back on to all of the contacts that had custom tones... All I am allowed to use are the default text tones. I think APPLE needs to fix this soon.

I also spent a good deal of time on the phone with Apple, and they didn't know how to fix it. They basically told me that I could "buy" all new like tones, and that was it. Rather unacceptable if you ask me.

IF enough people poke Apple, they might fix it sooner than later if at all.

That isn't the issue. The tones are there in iTunes, and it says that they're on my device. The problem is: You can't set them. The latest iOS just shows the default ones and the classic ones.

I've removed the tones, put them back, and still not allowed... Not even an option to set them back on any of the contacts that I had them set on. Literally just gives you the default tone options when setting unique tones for users.

I'd really like this to get fixed. Everyone has different tones on my phone. I have 168 unique ones. I'm a little anal in regard to personalizing the tones.

OK: Here's where I'm at. After running into this months ago, I was able to drag and drop the custom tones into my tones folder in iTunes when my phone was connected and things worked - until the next update. Now: I am missing some custom ringtones (as shown in the iTines folder; which indicates they SHOULD be on my phone), and I am missing ALL my custom ringtones on my iPhone. I still have them all in the tones folder in my Music/iTunes folder, but no longer can drag and drop - not from the finder desktop, not from the folder, etc. I have done a reboot of the phone, and finally in desperation, wiped it and did a restore from a back up when things were working - NO LUCK, because I'm still using IOS 11. If anyone could help, I'm at my wit's end. After wiping the phone I had to restore all the passwords and other nice things that wiping destroyed - I knew that, but felt I was out of options. Apple, are you listening? As Steve Jobs once said regarding an ongoing problem, "Just fix it!" Anyone? I'd love to resolve this.

Thank you - I should have put that in my lengthy post - tried that several times as well. No luck. What's very frustrating is that when this all started last fall, I was able to get them all back into the iTunes Tones folder (when the iPhone was connected) via drag and drop OR copy and paste - and get them back into the phone itself. Now, as I said, three or four have disappeared from the iTunes Tones folder, and as far as the missing ones OR the other 20-30 custom tones that still show up in the tones folder, NONE of them show up on my phone. My contacts list shows the custom ringtone assigned to it, but when you examine it, or check to see the custom tone, it's simply not there - it defaults to the original and the classic set - none of the custom ones are resident in the iPhone anymore. All of ones are still present on my computer, in the Music folder/ iTunes folder/Tones.

Same with me, got Apple Support on phone twice, they see the problem but just give me the “will be in a future update” crap, very frustrating since the custom tone is RIGHT THERE IN THE LIST AND PLAYS JUST FINE on its own but if I set it as my ringtone, the phone goes to their default “reflection” on its own. It has begun, the machines are taking over, HA!

How do I remove and add? Are you saying go into laptop iTunes and remove & re-add there? ITunes doesn’t have this under my tones, with first iPhone you could custom create a ringtone from a library song which is what I did back then. Has made it thru every iPhone but w IOS 11, the ringtone is there & slected, the phone no longer uses it. I’ve tried everything, so has Apple. The tone is there and plays like any purchased one, phone won’t use it, argh!
