iTunes 12.7 has stopped working

After upgrading to iTunes 12.7.0.166 on my Windows 8 laptop this morning, iTunes will not open. I've rebooted the machine, reinstalled the software and i'm still having the same issue. I will open iTunes, it opens up but immediately fails and throws an error that states iTunes has stopped working. When I choose, Close program, it closes iTunes, starts back up and fails again with the same error. It's now basically in a loop. The only way to get out of the loop is to reboot the PC. After reboot, i've attempted to open iTunes again and I end up in the same loop. Anyone else having issues with the 12.7 iTunes upgrade on Windows 8 computers?

If iTunes is apparently installed correctly try the following in turn until iTunes opens/closes/reopens normally:

  • Remove any SD card that might be in a card reader.
  • Exit the BTTray.exe Bluetooth utility if installed.
  • Locate the shortcut for iTunes, right-click on it, and select Run as administrator. Doing this once may fix certain launch issues. Some users were finding that with the 12.6.1.25 build they had to use this method every time and modified the shortcut accordingly.
  • Try holding ctrl+shift as you launch iTunes so it opens in safe-mode. Again doing this once may sometimes help.
  • Try disconnecting your computer from the Internet before running iTunes. Some versions of iTunes don't seem to like connecting through a proxy server.
  • Delete the iTunes shortcuts from the start menu, desktop, task bar, or similar, then repair iTunes from the programs and features control panel.
  • Try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support and test the behaviour in a different user profile or with a different library. If the problem only exists in your profile it may be possible delete some of the iTunes preference files which it would seem that iTunes may be choking on. We can go into details later if the issue is limited to your own profile.
  • Temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus and see if that has any impact on the behaviour.
  • See the second box in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for detailed tear down and rebuild advice. Disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus software when reinstalling and run the installer as the administrator.
  • Or see the iTunes installers section of the troubleshooting tip and reinstall the last version that worked correctly for you.

I uninstalled then selected to "Repair". Then it refused to repair anything but iTunes was still there. So I uninstalled iTunes completely from my system and now when I tried to install either the latest one or any of the back issued ones (iTunes 12.7.0.166, or iTunes 12.6.2.20, etc) itunes is completely gone and I cannot get it back. There is an error screen that reads:

I tried to run the installer again and again and this same thing pops up every time. HELP!! please.
note: I am on Win10.

UPDATE:

I have figured out that if i disconnect from the internet and open iTunes 12.7, it will open up just fine. I can then connect to the internet and use iTunes as normal. The store, music, videos, podcasts etc. But...if i were to close iTunes and open it back up when connected to the internet, i get the error again.

I actually reached out to Apple Support via Twitter and they've been responsive. I've went through the proper uninstall guide to remove Apple software in a certain order and delete certain files and then reinstall. I'm running into the same issue.

Here's the uninstall guide they sent me - Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later - Apple Support

So then i went throught he whole uninstall and removal of Apple software, rebooted, and then reinstalled with a older version, 12.4.3.1, and iTunes opened up but threw and error that said it could open the iTunes Library.itl because it was created by a newer version. I found the iTunes folder in the My Music folder, renamed it to iTunesold and reopened iTunes 12.4.3.1 and it work great - i just don't have my library which isn't a big deal as i can move files over to the new folder etc.

I am now in the process of upgrading from 12.4.3.1 to 12.7 to see if it will work this time.

It is not just on Windows. On my recent iMac, iTunes will not open. It shows a "hang" status. Rebooting, safe mode restart, unplugging the computer etc. Has no effect. ITunes is just unresponsive and has to be force quit. I have contacted Apple and am waiting for a call back from "second level". It is likely that I will have to reinstall the whole operating system not jusy iTunes. Not impressed!

UPDATE:

Upgrade from 12.4.3.1 to 12.7 resulted in the same issues. Fails to open when connected to Internet, will open when not connected to internet. I was able to find a 12.6.2.20 exe file to use and i'm currently using iTunes 12.6.2.20 and it works great.

I have another Windows machine, that runs Windows 10, that I am going to try and upgrade from 12.5.5.5 to 12.7.1.166.

Apple support via twitter has been helpful and responsive but i think we're both at a loss as to why this is happening.

Thanks,

Luke

I have the same problem but it does not get caught in a loop it just closes iTunes. I called Apple support and we went thru a complete uninstall of all Apple components (iTunes, Bonjour, 64 bit, 32bit...) on my Dell Windows 7. reinstalled and got the same error. then was transferred to a supervisor which had me repair everything Apple in the control panel uninstall part. no success and finally the supervisor just hung up on me. no call back yet from Apple support. I have had similar problems on other major version updates and even lost my library and connections to iPod where iTunes wants to erase everything and start over. i have had to stop updating my two iPods for fear of loosing all the music and audio books already installed.

Hello, if you have windows 7 8 or 10 the file that is new is located on the Music\iTunes Folder

there is an old file form the previous version in this case 12.6 that you need to rename an overwrite the one you have under Music

Current Version is here

C:\Users\YOUR USER\Music\iTunes\

Previous version is here

C:\Users\YOUR USER\Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries

that should work

Running Windows 7, 12.7 now crashes many times every day. I have seen this before 12.7 also, but much less frequently. I used to have to reset Internet Explorer settings (most likely due to proxy issues), but now it seems I have nailed it down to only having to delete this registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\MigrateProxy

As soon as I do that, I am able to restart iTunes

I have the same problem, now I cannot backup my iPhone. Apple support, please can you give us guidance on this? I like estito2537 have rolled back to the prior version 12.6.2 and now get this error: THE FILE "ITUNES LIBRARY.ITL" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. CAN YOU POST A VERSION OF THIS FILE THAT WORKS WITH 12.6.2?

iTunes 12.7 has stopped working
