Update using the App Store app on your iPhone, in the Updates tab. As publicized, iTunes 12.7 does not have an apps section.

Does this mean that apps are NOT backed up in iTunes backups? If so, then I would have to download them all again (if I have wifi, thanks to apple) if I have to reset and restore my iOS device. I think I am going to revert back to earlier version( I know I saw something here on how to do this. I sure wish I had read about this before answering yes on the upgrade. This change is HUGE, and it should have been a new rev (13.0) instead of an incremental update of the same rev.

Any what about iTunes backup to iCloud? I cannot backup a 128 GB iPhone on iCloud,

Whatever the unfortunate reason that you don't have broadband Internet, you should understand that Apple must move forward; they cannot design their software for the minority with the slowest Internet connections. iTunes users have been asking for this for some time, i.e., for Apple to separate iOS from iTunes. Everyone I know stopped syncing their iOS devices via their Macs long since. It just doesn't make sense for the great majority of people. Makes me wonder how you update Mac OS and its apps, which can run to gigabytes of data.

David,

I have been an apple user for MANY years and have 100+ apps including Microsoft Word etc that run to 91 GB of .IPA Apps.

Lets say 10% of that is updated Monthly its 9Gb x 10 Devices = 90Gb of Download.

We pay a LOT for mobile only data as we live in a rural location and broadband is not available.

That the equivalent of $100+ per month in Internet just do download updates. It was 1/10th of that.

Thanks

Paul

I do backup my iPhone and iPad to my mac. Except now it seems that the apps are not backed up. How do they get restored without downloading 20 GB on my phone?

Also, a problem that keeps happening on my iPhone 7 is that the App Store app cannot download updates. It draws the circle and nothing more. In iTunes 12.7 and thus happens, apps cannot be updated. I have searched forums for solutions to this issue and have had to resort to Reset All Settings on my iPhone on several occasions, which resolves it but wipes out any wireless network passwords and your Wallet. Which magical setting causes the problem?

Your best bet is to go back to the previous version of iTunes if you have upgraded, and stay with it until it won't work any longer. At that point you might need to think about getting rid of mobile devices; they're not for everyone or every circumstance.

That is a totally and completely snobbish attitude!

There is much more than a small minority of people in that

category.

This worked for me sweet! Thanks for sharing this.

For Apple you guys are F@#$% up. This ridiculous for making a change for something we've been using since the first iPhone came out. I can only imagine the guy with 5+ devices in a family. We put all our money on your devices iPad, iPod, phones and this how you guys treat your customers 😕.

You know how they will get you to update the iTunes when you download iOS 11, you will need the latest iTunes 12.7 to sync and backup your phone. They got me when I updated to version iOS v.10 and I was required to update to the latest iTunes which then also removed a lot features used.

Not at all. I mean yes, I am a member of the East-Coast wealthy liberal elite, but that's beside the point.

Mr./Ms. PDundas reports having 10 iOS devices and also having no broadband Internet. Even his Mac gets its connection via an iPhone personal hotspot. So what is s/he to do when iTunes 12.6 no longer works and the only way to update 10 iOS devices is via cellular data? Clearly, such mobile devices aren't for everybody in all situations.

There is much more than a small minority of people in that category.

No, there's not. According to the FCC's 2016 Broadband Progress Report,

  • "10 percent of all Americans (34 million people) lack access to 25 Mbps/3 Mbps service.
  • "39 percent of rural Americans (23 million people) lack access to 25 Mbps/3 Mbps."

So while 40 percent of those in PDundas's situation lack broadband, overall, only 10 percent of Americans lack the service. That's a small minority.

Other than staying with iTunes 12.6 as long as possible I don't have a solution for PDundas. Do you? And do you have a solution for when 12.6 no longer works? (Not counting the obvious, satellite Internet, which would appear to be the only solution to the problem.)

Actually, they were.

Example: (sorry for the long explanation, but the details count)

When one of the paid apps updated on my Ipod Touch 6, the updated app turned out to be nothing but ads and higher costs, and crashed each time I used it. Fortunately, I did not update the app in iTunes, only the iPod.

I had to do a full wipe and restore on my Ipod Touch 6 to get it out.

I used iTunes to restore with a back up a week old.

I did not want a "New Version" to be downloaded to iTunes so, I did not allow my comp to connect to WiFi.

The iPod restored ALL the apps that were stored on my macbook, including the older version of the bad app that caused the problem in the first place. Never connecting to the internet, or the App Store at all.

My iPod is running fine, and has the older version running. All I have to do is to remember NOT to update that app in iTunes or allow it to update online, and it will never bother me again. I have done this many times with all of my devices. I can keep older versions of apps from updating, and even keep older versions of apps for my iPod 5th gen (I have 2 of these) and even my iPod 4th gen, which I keep in the car.

Since my 2 5's and the 4th gens of iPod and iPad can't update to any newer IOS's, and I have tried to get older versions that were on those devices from the app store but can't. So, I use the ones that will work on them that are stored in the app folders in my iTunes library. I have tried to even get the older versions of pages and numbers for my 5th gens but they are not available. Thank goodness for my Time Capsule, as I have them there from long ago.

Very soon, the iPod 6th, iPad pro's and any other devices that are just a few years old will be in the same predicament. What are the Millions of users of these devices supposed to do in just a year or so?

Unless Apple is going to offer us Free Cloud space for all these apps, and Free bandwidth to retrieve them, this is going to cost Apple a great many customers.

And what of the App Developers? This will cut down on customers just surfing the app store on their MacBooks. I for one do not want to burn up my phone's battery hunting for new apps on my phone. And/or Only when I am near a public WiFi (which many know is not very secure to begin with). And/or only if I am near my plug outlet, too.

I can understand that Apple is trying to force us all into just "Streaming" everything, but they need to also realize that streaming will cost us, the customers, all too much.

Very soon I can see Apple doing this also to their music and video service. They tried it before with storing Our music on the cloud, but it didn't work out so well the last time. But I see they are now going to try it again, only with the App Store this round. This attitude of slowly forcing the users to what they want is similar to what Microsoft did years ago, and it didn't end well for them, either.

So, in the end, most of us will end up NOT updating to the new IOS or new High Sierra.

There's an easy way to get Apple to stop all of this...........

What would happen if NOBODY updated to the latest versions of IOS, MacOS, or iTunes????

How much will all those directors in those boardrooms panic? After all, my Macbook, iPad, iPhones, iPods and Watch all run juuuust Fine right now. I realllly don't Neeeeed all those pretty bells and pretty whistles. All of those that must have the newest iPhones and devices are ego driven anyway. It's us, the every-person, that keeps the apple fresh and from rotting away. Apple needs to be reminded that they promised to listen to us.
