After using Siri via AirPods, screen stays on indefinitely in pocket

Running into a strange behavior with Siri via Bluetooth. Situation: with my phone in my pocket, I activate Siri using my AirPods and issue a command to play music. Siri finishes, and the music plays. Later (potentially much later, like, 30 mins later) I take my phone out of my pocket and discover that the screen is on, and has apparently been on since I used Siri. In the meantime, my phone has never been removed from my pocket.

This seems really odd to me. First of all, why would activating Siri cause my display to turn on if my phone is in my pocket? Second, why wouldn’t the screen at least turn off automatically?

This seems like a bug (it’s inconceivable that it’s a feature, since it drains your battery and doesn’t make any sense), but I’m surprised is hasn’t been fixed since the launch of the AirPods. The whole idea of them supporting Siri is to be able to use your phone without taking it out, right?

FWIW, I have my display auto-lock set to one minute. Doesn’t seem to make a difference. On an iPhone 7.

Hi,

Yes you are right this is an odd one. If you use a passcode or touch id on your device that would tell me that the device had to be unlocked previously to being put in your pocket. If you were playing a video or something similar on your device it would not shut the screen off unless you lock the device yourself. Now if you believe this is not the case then you may want to update your software on your device using iTunes. If your device is currently up to date you can reinstall the update.

Thanks for the quick response, FinePok! I understand your point, but in this case, the device was in my pocket, locked, with the screen off, when I activated Siri. It was the usage of Siri that caused my screen to turn on in my pocket and remain on indefinitely. When I removed the phone from my pocket 30 mins later, the screen was on, with the Siri interface still visible (the phone was still locked, of course).

The reason I posted this here is because I don't believe it's something wrong with my software; it seems to be an actual bug or flaw in the design of iOS. Wanted to confirm that other people are experiencing the same thing, in the hopes that by calling attention to it, it might get fixed.

I have this same issue with my AirPods and my iPhone 6s plus. My phone is locked in my pocket, but screen apparently activities when I activate Siri - i know because my phone get very hot after a while and I pull it out to find the screen on in the Siri screen and the phone is still locked. I’ve even see this when I activiate siri and my phone is sitting locked on the table. The siri screen does not go away.

I have not yet tried this with iOS 11 - only iOS 10. I have to wait till next week to upgrade my phone to iOS11, but I can let you know if this behavior changes then.

I have had this issue also since I bought my AirPods in November. It has been an issue ever since they have been out. I talked to Apple support about it and they suggest I reset my settings on my iPhone 7 and see if that fixes it and if not I am supposed to do a fresh restore. I think it worked for like a hot minute before it went back to glitching out. I doubt that this is going to change anything since I am not the only one with this issue. Also, when I use my phone to make a phone call...the standby screen is actually my phones buttons so I have accidentally hung up on people with my phone in my pocket. I am going to do a fresh install on the iPhone X on Friday and see if I encounter the same issues. I do notice this only happens with the phone in my pocket...not on the table or in my hand.
