What Sceen Cleaner do they use at the Genius Bar?

Hi

I have several MacBookPros, two of them with the retina display screens. The screens get dirty from things like finger prints which are greasy and hard to remove.

I read that Apple suggests using water, it's hard to get grease off with water. When I have brought my computers to the Genius Bar they spray some brand of screen cleaner which works super well. Maybe it is distilled water? But it works so quickly that I have to believe it is something more then water.

Does anyone know what the screen cleaner is, who makes it, where to purchase it? I want to get some. I figure if they use it it must be approved by Apple and not damage the screen.

Thanks in advance!

Brandon

Hi All,

I visited an Apple Genius Bar today to bring my MPB in for repair. While I was there I asked about he screen cleaner and as I remembered they do use a screen cleaner. Frank (anApple Genius tech) told me they use it all the time and buy it in bulk because it works so well.

Here is a link to the 3.4oz: http://amzn.to/2g9GJuV

Here is a link to the big bottle (16.9oz) I ordered: http://amzn.to/2fI5DRL

Here is a link to wipes they have: http://amzn.to/2yHzgKf

Here is verification for any doubters out there. (shot taken today at Apple store in San Mateo, CA)

Hi BobTheFisherman,

Thank you. As I explained in my original email, I have read what Apple says on their website. However, it is NOT what they do at the Genius Bar. Getting grease based marks off anything, much less your screen, with water is not effective.

Given they use something in a commercial bottle at the Apple Genius Bar (several different ones that I have been to all use it) that works super well, I would like to know what that is so I can buy some. If they use it there it must be approved.

Thank you

Brandon

Hi JimmyCMPIT

Thanks for the reply. I do not think it is just distilled water, it has something else in it because it is made by another company. I remember that much have had three screen replaced on my retina displays and the Genius Bar guy/gal cleaning my screen.

Getting grease based marks off with water is not effective. At best you will smudge it all over and possibly as you are scrubbing scratch the screen because if there a piece of dirt in the grease (since grease is sticky) you will scrub/wipe it all over the screen.

Sounds like so far no one knows and a trip back to the genius bar is going to be in order.

Thanks

Brandon

Apple does not include distilled water in their suggestions but putting some on a lint free cloth and not directly on the surface of a display will thoroughly clean off most anything outside of glue, paint and toxic waste and not leave any chemical or mineral residue. If they are using something in the App store to spray on your display I'm hedging my bets on distilled water.

Then contact the Apple Store you went to.

This is a volunteer forum and we can not make a claim on what Apple uses if they don't specifically state what it is, it could have been Deep Woods OFF or Channel #5. Whatever it is Apple is not saying it in any of their documentation so we could guess all day or you could call them and ask: 1-800-MY-APPLE in North America or go to apple.com/contact for a list of international phone numbers.

BTW, distilled water and micro fiber cloth will take grease off displays, I work with some disgusting people who think their iMacs must have touch screens or they don't know where napkins are kept but I have repeatedly proven your theory regarding distilled water when used with this type of fabric as being ineffectual with grease as boloney.

Hi Klaus1,

Of course I can ask them. In order to do that I have to drive to a Genius Bar. It's not right around the corner for me and I was hoping that since this forum has so many Apple users around the world and experts that someone would know and save me a trip to the store. A lot easier to ask here and order online vs the alternative which is exactly why these forums exist. To crowd source info.

I am grateful you took the time to answer. You just do not have the answer. It appears the others in this thread so far do not as well and that is cool. Having said that I believe that out of the tens of millions of Apple customers that frequent these forums someone else has had the same experience as me at a Genius Bar and may know the answer. That's all I am looking for. There are tons of responses on these forums that are not "official" answers and have worked to get something done.

If I go to the store before someone else posts here the answer I will make sure I take a pic and post for other people to benefit.

Thanks

Brandon
