The GROWL icon is visible in system preferences but not in my apps folder. I want to remove it completely. It was downloaded on the back of some other software. I don't use any cleaning software as this caused me some serious problems recently. What is the best way to clean my mac without using any of the cleaning software packages.

Growl's page on uninstalling at

lists these extra files you could remove manually
~/Library/Preferences/com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp.plist
~/Library/Application Support/Growl/
(These are in the Library in your Home folder, not the Library at root level).
Depending on the version of Growl you had, you may be advised to re-install and use the uninstaller - see the page for details.
