iPhone 5s stuck at iTunes logo

My iPhone 5s is somehow stuck, as powering on the device will only show me the iTunes logo.

I have tried restoring/updating but only for the iTunes application to be stuck at 'Verifying iPhone restore...' or Verifying iPhone update...'. I have left it overnight a couple of times to no avail, on the iPhone it will just show the Apple logo with a bar at the bottom that isn't moving.

I have tried restarting and performing a hard reset with the hardware keys several times even while connected to iTunes but it's still the same. I've also updated my iTunes to the latest software.

The only thing I can't do is to get it into DFU mode as the moment I plug in the lightning cable to my iPhone, it immediately turns on which makes pressing down the power button for 3 seconds impossible.

I'm not sure what OS did I last updated it to but I know this happen while updating the phone to one of the iOS 10 updates. My guess is the battery died while updating hence the problem now

Normally I would be able to solve these kind of problems myself with some Googling of course but this one is rather challenging?

Any help or input would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You're right that trying DFU restore is your next step and you can get into DFU mode. From recovery mode, with USB connected, press power and home until you hear the USB disconnect sound. Then count 1-2-3 and release the power button only, keeping home held down and USB connected---it will boot to DFU.

If you are just hanging at restore early on then it could be firmware, or bad NAND flash memory or bad Tristar chip. All are repairable, but only Tristar chip repair is likely "worth it" from a value perspective.

If the logic is toast, might be time to scrape up the price of a new handset
