Hi,

The burn program on your Mac will burn only a data DVD of about 20 minutes duration that can be played only on a computer and not in a DVD player.

To burn a Movie DVD as opposed to a data DVD, you will need a DVD authoring program such as iDVD or Roxio Toast. The procedure is to share your movie of less than 2 hours duration to your desktop and then drag it into the edge of an open iDVD project screen. It will import in. Then select "burn disc image" from the iDVD File menu. It will take a while for the encoding to take place. When the encoding is finished you will have disc image icon on your desk top. Put a DVD-R disc into your optical burner, either a built in burner or a plugged in external burner. Then Control-click on the icon of the disk image that you previously burned. A drop down menu will appear. Select Burn Disc. A box will appear giving you options. In the box, select to burn at 4x speed and check the box to eject disc when burning is finished. Click Burn. A progress bar will show the status of the burning process. When the burn is finished the disc will eject. You can then play the disc on your computer or on a DVD player.

If you don't have the iDVD app on your computer you can buy it for about $15 on Amazon as part of the packaged iLife '09 or iLife '11 packages. See for example:

Amazon.com: iLife '11 [OLD VERSION]

Alternatively, the Roxio Toast program is available on line, but costs considerably more money. Pretty near everyone prefers iDVD because of ease of use and the availability of numerous themes.

Hope this helps.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

If you are using iDVD with El Capitan or Sierra see this thread:
