incoming email from one account only not accepted by osX 10.11.6

I recently updated from Snow Leopard to El Capitan 10.11.6. All is well except my apple email program is not accepting incoming mail to one of my email accounts. I can send from that account.

I have checked the certificate for that account and it is set at “Always trust” three times. I have been using that server Uniserve for years. As all other mail accounts are funtioning perfectly, I perceive that this is related to more stringent security in the El Capitan system.

Here is the error notice that I receive in the Inbox. I have tested sending out to another of my own accounts and the send is in order.

I have no idea which settings to look at now. I am not a computer expert and may cause further problems in this new to me OS X if I mess with security settings myself.

Like elaine______ my failure to download new INBOX mail from (just) Yahoo server seems to be fixed, altho it's not clear why. If I deleted an item using the web interface, it would appear in the Yahoo/Trash mailbox in Mac Mail, and I could move it back to INBOX by right-clicking and picking the box to move to. Then some new mail items downloaded normally. Then some didn't. I manually moved a few more items. After a few days, all new Yahoo mail started downloading properly and it's worked for a week now. Still a mystery to me why.

I have same problem, no new IMAP mail gets downloaded from just one provider, Yahoo. Connection Doctor shows no problem connecting to that server and other IMAP accounts work fine. Lots of users are reporting similar problem, so there's a good chance it's a glitch at Yahoo. I've tried rebuilding that mailbox, deleting and restoring the account, and rebuilding Mail (v. 9.3 on OS X.11.6) indexes -- no help. Anything else to try?

It is now accepting incoming mail! I'm sorry to say, I'm not certain which step in my attempted solutions broke the barrier, or for that matter, which possible combination. ('X' means "no go - did not solve) • I entered a completely new account: X. I changed one piece of information at a time and checked each one, by sending mail to that account from another of my accounts: X. I checked another of my computers, which was receiving that account properly (on OS X Lion 10.7.5) and made sure that all my account settings matched exactly: X. I checked the Lion computer's keychain access and the El Capitan's to make sure that all passwords were identical for that account. They were. I changed ports: X. I changed the ports back to the previous successful setting: X. I shut down the entire El Capitan iMac computer and restarted it: X. I opened and then 'quit' my mail program: X. The umpteenth notice came up that I must enter my password. So I entered it: YES √ and suddenly all the test mails that I sent turned up, along with some real ones from clients of that organization for which I manage email. Thank you for the various suggestions.
