Can't play ringtone in iOS 11

I have an iPhone 6 Plus. After I upgraded today to iOS 11, the phone won't play my personalized ringtones. They are still there and will play when I look at them in Sounds/Ringtone and one of them still shows as the selected ringtone, but when a call comes in, it goes to the default Opening. Any ideas?

Folks, I'll post once more in case some of you missed it. I synched with iTunes via sync cable. After synching, go to Settings>Sounds & Haptics>Ring Tone. Scroll to very top. Download All Purchased Tones. Worked for me when I did the first upgrade of iOS 11. Same thing happened when I upgraded to 11.2.6. Repeated the synching process and all ringtones restored.

Hi there psd31047,

After updating to iOS 11 it seems that your selected custom ringtone isn't sounding, rather the default one is instead. Let's start by selecting the default ringtone. Then quit the Phone and Settings apps:

Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once that is complete, restart the phone and test it out again:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, have a great one!

Apple support has come up with the answer... it the way ringtones were delivered to the phone.. (synched etc) If you purchased the ringtone from the iTunes store , if you go to settings - sounds... above the ringtones there is a "Tone Store" blue link, if there are tones you can re-download which will be downloaded and are delivered to the phone there will be another blue link below that "tone store" link..it will say "download all purchased Tones" .. click it and it will re-download useable ringtones for the new iOS 11... IT seems any ringtones you have made or got outside the iTunes store work fine already...the problem is only with ringtones previously purchased from the iTunes store

I’ve found that a minority of the ringtones I have on my phone do work. To tell which ones will work and which ones will not edit a contact but instead of editing their ring tone edit their text tone (located right below where you pick the ring tone). Scroll through the list of text tones and if you see any of your custom ringtones listed those ringtones will work. Any that aren’t listed in this screen will not work even if you can pick them when selecting a ringtone for a contact or setting the default ring tone.

It’s not a fix for the underlying issue but if you do have any ringtones that show up when assigning a text tone for a contact those will work without any issues if you use them as a ringtone..

I’m a beta tester and just reported this issue (and the information about the work around above to Apple). I think with the launch of the iPhone X they probably have bigger fish to fry. It’s all about how many people file a bug report so if you’re reading this thread take the 5 - 10 minutes it takes to report it. The more noise we make the faster they will fix it.

I had this same problem and no solution in this thread worked for me. My custom ringtone seemed to be corrupted and would not sound when receiving calls, only the default tone would sound. I just found a solution that worked for me. Apparently my custom ringtone that worked fine until recently was too long and now (post iOS 11 or some iTunes update?) needs to be 40 seconds or less. I recreated the ringtone from an m4a file in my iTunes Library, made it 25 seconds long and converted it to m4r using the instructions below. This is the best explanation I've seen for creating ringtones using iTunes. I did get confused trying to select the song I wanted to use as source from the iPhone itself instead of the iTunes Library. I've always had trouble navigating iTunes. But it's all working now. Hope this helps some others doing endless iPhone resets and waiting for a bug fix that hasn't come.

Yes, I did. You mentioned trying everything but.... haha! I followed the directions from an apparent Apple Tech. He (she) stated to set your Ringtone sound to default, reboot

, and then select the sound you want for your ringtone. I’ve had no problems since. I don’t know if it worked for anyone else who might have tried, but it worked for me on my 6S Plus. I hope it works for you – good luck! :)

I found ringtones were missing from some of my Contacts.

I got the correct ringtone to work by going into Contacts choose the contact you want the ringtone for, Edit, select ringtone, choose the ringtone called Opening, click Done, Done

Ringtone Sound: Opening now appears in that contacts details

Go back into Edit, now select the correct ringtone you want for that contact, click Done, Done

Ringtone: Sound ”chosen ringtone name” appears

so next time that person phones the correct ringtone should sound.

The first Contact I amended was my own because Ringtone was missing from my contact details.

After spending several hours trying the various solutions offered here to no avail the only one that worked was to follow the advice here of buying the same ringtone from the Apple store to replace the one I'd made from the song I purchased through iTunes five years ago. I felt that my time was worth more to me than the $1.29 that it cost me to solve this problem. My guess is that I helped some Apple software engineer with their holiday bonus for implementing this money making idea. Merry and Happy to everyone!
