Updating people in iOS 11 Photos takes forever

After upgrading my iPhone 7 Plus to iOS 11, updating people (i.e., face recognition) takes forever in Photos. Leaving the phone connected to power and locked all night doesn't resolve this.

Is this normal?

Wonder if you ever resolved your updating issue. I had the same issue but today I resolved it. Hope this works for you if you haven't.

Today I noticed a few People would say "Review" on the top of screen after going into a specific person. So I went thru all the people in the album and clicked to review wherever it popped up. Locked and plugged. Within 15mins the Updating is gone at the bottom of all the People as well as in each specific person.

Do you have Photo issues on your MacBook end? I forgot to mentioned, I removed identifying by name anyone with only one photo as these were the one on my iPhone 8 that indicated "Updating..." and never did overnight. Using my MacBook, I basically removed the names on those people with only one photo, leaving it "Unnamed." All the updates on my iPhone 8 completed within 15 minutes.

I only have 15k photos and 266 people, but on my Mac it ended up taking a long time, then I worked out it was 'stuck' in some way shape or form. So I shut down Photos and started again, that seemed to get it back on track. However in the end, my libraries weren't totally synching, so after backing up the library file, I deleted it and re-downloaded, which took 24 hours, but Photos across iPhone, iPad, Mac and MAcBook are now all the same!

Mine's been trying to scan photos for about a month on iPhone X. It's on 19,000 out of 65,000. I think it might finish before I get the iPhone 11 next year.

I like google's way of doing everything in the cloud much better. It will eventually be smarter and better than Apple's per-device approach. Only names and some meta data sync on iCloud, but processing are all done on individual devices.

I wish there's a button to force scan with 100% CPU power. So at least it can be done.

Both my iPhone and a Mac have been in this state for me _ever_since_ iOS and MacOS were upgraded (pushing three weeks for iOS). I have ~50K pictures/videos but also 100/100 internet, so I don't think it is a bandwidth issue. I am resetting expectations and no longer expect it to ever finish or add much value, which is too bad as this is the most relevant improvement in Photos for me for both platforms (if I could go back to iOS 10, I probably would. Much more stable).

Import to note the distinction between 'Scanning photos' and 'Updating People' – seems like these are two separate stages. My devices appear to have finish scanning photos but gets stuck updating People.

This has been happening to me since the iOS 11 public beta. Faces/People used to work fine, and now it seems to have scanned my entire library (no more "To continue scanning, lock your iPhone") however the message at the bottom of the People screen has read "To finish updating your people, lock your iPhone and connect it to power." for months.

I recently tried this:

  • Backed up my iCloud Photo Library to a hard drive
  • Removed all existing People from the album (i.e. Reset the People album)
  • Turned off iCloud Library on my iPhone
  • Waited for all photos in the cloud to disappear from my device, then manually deleted all photos stored locally
  • Turned on iCloud Library on my iPhone
  • Restarted the scanning process.

It completed, worked its way through about 15,000 images/videos. Still that message appears on all iOS and macOS devices using iCloud Library: "To finish updating your people…"

I have no idea what's happening, but I loved this feature and used it a lot. Super disappointed. It would make sense to me that this would be a server-side issue if all devices are showing it – so I'm holding off resetting my whole iPhone because I don't know what good it would do. Gonna contact Apple support about it soon, but not expecting much. Anyone actually tried that yet?

Upgraded to iPhone 8 Plus and it has been doing it for 24 hours (connect to WiFi and very fast, stable internet) and seems stuck at ‘analyzing library 2%’. Normally I wouldn’t mind if this was a background project, but it drastically slows down photos loading in iCloud Photo Library when I have pictures added in photos on Mac or the iPad. I guess it’s just a long waiting game. Additionally, in photos, it’s consfsntly ‘updating’.

I'm still getting the message "Updating People...To finish updating your people, lock your iPhone and connect it to power."

I thought I would completely erase my iPhone and restore from an iTunes backup. But when I went to erase the iPhone, it received this message: "Documents and Data Are Being Uploaded to iCloud. If you erase now you will lose documents and data that are being uploaded to iCloud." I then have three choices: Finish Uploading Then Erase; Erase Now or Cancel.

I went head and chose Erase Now. I don't use iCloud for Photos and can't think of anything that should be uploading. After erasing and restoring, I'm still getting the Updating People message. It's really frustrating.
