I agree with everything you wrote. My guess is that Apple Employees don’t actually use their own products. I know one employee who uses Android because he can customize it much more.
Still no fix with 4.2. Have you heard anything else? I'm thinking of emailing Apple about this. I sent feedback, but I don't think they ever read that. I'm not aware of any evidence that they do.
No, haven't heard anything. The more consumers that complain to Apple about it, the better.

Do you still think it is a bug!? I keep faithfully updating each time hoping that they change their policy, but you still can’t use the watch as a watch anymore
I’m starting to think this was an intentional change along with making music controls auto launch. I think it’s related to repositioning the watch as a fitness only device and Apple Music portal.
I am having the same problem with the Stopwatch by Apple.
So until they fix it/and or give us an option
