Hello BryC,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

I see that you just upgraded to iOS 11 last night, and now your iMessage notifications don't wake the screen. It's important to make sure that you are receiving your notifications correctly, so I'm happy to help you resolve this.

I suggest trying the steps in this support article: Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch , specifically:

If you don't see notifications for a specific app

To get notifications, connect to a Wi-Fi or cellular network. If you don't get notifications for a specific app, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that the app supports notifications. Go to Settings > Notifications, select the app, and make sure that Notifications are turned on.
  2. If you have notifications turned on for an app but you're not receiving alerts, you might have Banners turned off. Go to Settings > Notifications, turn on Show as Banners and choose a type of banner that you want to see.
  3. Make sure that you’re signed in to your Apple ID. Go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores and enter your Apple ID and password.
  4. Make sure that Do Not Disturb is turned off. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and turn it off. Or swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center and tap User uploaded file.
  5. If you’ve recently installed an app or restored from a backup, open the app to start getting notifications.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best Regards.

Same issue here with iPhone 7 Plus updated from iOS 10.3.3 to iOS 11 and used with a Apple Watch Series 2 running Watch OS 4.

Have tried all of the steps supplied by Starr.C plus more with no positive results.

Same bug being all text, MMS or iMessages do not wake the screen on the iPhone when they are received by the iPhone, but the Apple Watch does alert me that a message has been received.

Have tried with silent switch enabled and disabled with no luck and found that when silent switch was disabled that there was no text tone either for when the message was received by the iPhone, so no waking of the screen display and no audible text tone.

But the funny thing is if I disable or turn off bluetooth everything works fine.??? Strange.

Incoming mail alerts work fine waking the screen using the default Mail app and also the Outlook app with Hotmail accounts.

I think this may be some sort of bug with the new feature of (DND) do not disturb while driving as I believe it has a feature or option where it can be enabled automatically when connected to a car bluetooth system. Not sure but possible I guess.???

All that I could say to BryC is to test the iPhone 7 with bluetooth disabled.

I also reset the Apple Watch and restored from a backup to see if it was the problem but it did not fix the issue, next step if it was the Apple Watch would be to restore as new but I am sure that this is a bug with the iPhone and iOS 11.

Early days with a new iOS with lots of wrinkles to iron out I guess.

I am finding bugs with notifications as well. I don't have Messages notifications on the lock screen (for privacy/security reasons), and when I receive a message, I hear the beep. But when I unlock the phone, there is no notification (other than the badge). Prior to iOS 11, as soon as I unlocked the phone, i would get a drop-down notification which prompted me to check for the missed message. Now, no drop-down. I temporarily turned it to notify with a banner (now called "Persistent") and even that doesn't show. Apple needs to get a bug report!

I am also not receiving notifications and it's not an app it's imessage therefore I cannot uninstal and reinstal the app. I have rebooted restarted etc...I have checked the do not disturb and all the other things listed above and still no banner notification or sound and screen doesn't wake up. The only way to know is if there is a 1 or 2 by imessage telling me. I used to also get notifications for imessage and phone calls etc... on my garmin and now I no longer get them so I absolutely have no way of knowing...its really frustrating actually and has been since I got the new phone. PLEASE don't tell me to reboot or anything bc I have done all that. Unless you know something else besides what is listed above.

I had ios10 on my iphone 7, got the iphone 8 and it already had ios 11 on it and then did an update for ios11.2 and 11.3 and I don't know for sure when messages stopped if it was from one of the 11 updates or it hasnt worked at all on my new phone but it's not a good thing and I have no idea when to fix it. Any idea when ios11.4 is out?

I'm having this issue as well on the iPhone X. It will not wake my phone or alert when the screen is off. I have to wake the phone by touching it in order to see alerts. My watch (series 3) alerts fine.

I've followed all the steps noted on the thread - Notifications are set - do not disturb while driving is set to manual (effectively disabled). I do have automatic DND set for overnight hours.

I don't have rise to wake enabled, but I'm hearing from co-workers with iPhone 8 that this is an issue for them as well, so rise to wake shouldn't matter.

I hope apple comes up with a bug fix for this soon. It's really annoying, and if I don't happen to be wearing my watch I'm missing messages that need to be responded to quickly.

Thanks

MK

Me too. Same issue. iMessage and Apple TV Keyboard don't wake my screen anymore. I have a Garmin smartband which send notifications to my wrist. The phone is freshly reset, after having several issues with handoff (stopped working after an update) so I reset everything. After I reset it, this started happening. I am on iOS 11.2.2

I get no alerts neither from stock mail. I have an Apple Watch4 and an iPhone , I have tried with and without wearing the watch but no notifications. I am on the latest update to iOS 11 and the latest update to my Apple Watch. But if I use Spark (a third party email app) I get alerts on both and both ways 100% of the time. I’ve had all iPhones from an iPhone 4 and on all none have seemed to alert until after I open the email app.

I have same problem.... iPhone X and wearing Garmin Fenix 5X watch. I get notifications on my watch, but my phone is completely silent (unless it is awake... in which case I get a normal text alert). Very frustrating.

I've done all the rebooting, etc.... My guess is that the phone thinks it is connected to a bluetooth device like a speaker and sends the sound/alert notification to the watch .....

Any fixes in sight?

Same problem here - if bluetooth is on I don't get iMessage notifications. It shows up on my screen, but does not wake the phone and does not make sound. Other apps, i.e. Whatsapp, alert me fine. I didn't have bluetooth on all the time before, but with the HomePod, I leave bluetooth on so that I don't have multiple Siris yelling at me. Now, though, I don't get the notifications. Any word? Thanks!

I've tried all these things (or they're irrelevant) and the issue is unresolved, for months now. The only notifications I'm not getting are for iMessages. I get notifications on my lock screen for regular texts, so it's not the app or DND settings. My FitBit is receiving all text and iMessage alerts.

One person mentioned that notifications worked when Bluetooth was turned off. This did not work for me.

This is ridiculous. It's not like this is an issue with an older phone like iPhone 4 or something trying to integrate new software into an older phone. This is happening with new phones and should have been caught in testing.

Here's what's going to happen. Apple will respond with crickets but eventually will figure it out.

Apple's quality control is really going downhill as evidenced by the recent survey saying that Apple had fallen from #3 on the most admired list down to #50. Can we say iPhone batteries?
