If you're tapping the buttons in control center, it's a change whereby tapping the icons drops the current connection but does not shut WiFi (or Bluetooth) off; to do that you have to use the slide toggles in Settings.

This is quite handy as you can disconnect from a current troublesome WiFi network without having to remember to reenable it later.

From the iOS 11 manual for iPhone:

It's only an annoyance if you let it be one. If you ever add an Apple Watch to your stable of iDevices, you'll actually really really appreciate this smart change. Even if you don't, as we've pointed out, no control was taken away as you can turn the Wifi or Bluetooth radio's off anytime you want and they'll stay off. Just don't expect Apple to walk back this change. Instead, just learn to adapt. It won't be the last change Apple makes along the way. Of that we can all be assured.

This is not acceptable. As an engineer with a career in communications security, this is a move away from best practices and even I wasn't well-informed before it was implemented.

This allows for potential security breaches / breaches in privacy without the user being aware, and it does not make any sense to have an on-off button in the pull-up that doesn't actually turn it off.

For me personally, I want to be on my wifi at home for specific tasks, and use cellular only for others, some tasks I want to utilize my cellular data and not have that information go through my home wireless network. Now I have to keep checking the pull-up menu to see if it turned it's self back on.

I seriously should not have to change a setting in my settings app to turn it on and off 10x a day. Apple customers should at least be informed loudly that a basic menu function has changed so drastically, as it can have affects on peoples data usage and security.

I am not huge at all. My BMI is in a normal range. You do realize you are not addressing Apple. This is a user to user technical support forum, and no one here cares what you do with your money.

And if you turn off Wi-Fi correctly, by going to Settings/Wi-Fi - OFF, it will not turn back on until you go to Settings/Wi-Fi -ON. You can, of course, also say "Hey Siri, turn off Wi-Fi"

Thats not everyones opinion, just some. Many articles have been written on the always on wifi and Bluetooth and what to do. I know because I have read them. Bottom line it may be ok for an apple watch owner or in car Bluetooth management but for some of us its a headache with reduced function and experience. Some apps look for wifi data when its blue and no wifi connected.

Do you want a solution or do you just want to whine?

The always on for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth has nothing to do with the Apple watch; is because it significantly improves location accuracy, especially when indoors and GPS doesn't work at all. Leaving Bluetooth on also coordinates multiple iOS devices if you say "Hey Siri" - the devices talk among themselves, so only the closest one to you answers.

The Bluetooth button in the Control Center is specifically to address your problem; if you touch it your speaker will be disconnected until you move away from it and move back, or until the next day. If you NEVER want to use the speaker just turn it off or get rid of it.

From the control center, it was a quick and easy way to toggle wifi, and now there is another extra step to do so. There are alot of people that have not realized this change with wifi turning back on automatically and drains battery.

1. The procedure is well-explained in the user guide.

2. WiFi does NOT drain the battery.

3. There is never any valid reason to turn off WiFi.

So Wikipedia knows more about how Apple product works than Apple does. Very interesting! IdrisSeabright has posted how APPLE says it works.

While Apple has repurposed one control for Wi-Fi, it has left 4 others, a primary and three shortcuts:

  1. The basic: Tap Settings, Tap Wi-Fi, tap OFF
  2. The first shortcut: "Hey Siri, turn off Wi-Fi"
  3. The second shortcut: Hold the HOME button, say: "Turn off Wi-Fi"
  4. The third shortcut: Hold your finger on Settings and a menu will appear: Tap "Wi-Fi"

Every one of the shortcuts is faster and easier than swiping up for the Control Center

Now that Apple has released the feature to disconnect from only the current network and still leave Wi-Fi on there is never any reason to turn off Wi-Fi. In the past, the only reason I ever turned off Wi-Fi was to disconnect from the current network. Then typically I would forget to turn it back on and run up a huge cellular overage. I love this feature; use it almost daily.

There will be all sorts of arguments in favor of this “feature” which is actually a mistake. Sorry if this sounds discouraging, but it’s a fact.

Why do you think it's a mistake? It's carefully noted in Apple's documentation. It's pretty clear that they implemented this intentionally. And, part of the reason was probably that some many people had been asking for it.

Lastly, apple’s selling point was not to have an instruction manual for the phone. The fact that features like this require you to read manuals or instructions itself proves that this is not implemented as per Apple’s design philosophy.

I'm not sure that Apple ever said that was a selling point. Regardless, you don't have to read the manual to understand this feature. The first time you tap the WiFi button in the Control Center after you update, it tells you how the feature works.

That fact that you don't like the feature (a perfectly legitimate preference), doesn't mean it was a mistake, illogical or ill-thought out.
