I found this post on another stream and it worked for me!

“ I might be wrong, but this could be because of how iTunes has just changed. If you go into Sounds & Haptics and for example go to text tone, you see at the top it’ll say “download all purchased tones” have you tried that?“

Well there have been 2 updates already since OS 11 blew my custom made ringtones out of the water and this issue persists. I keep checking back to these forums under the silly confidence that the brilliant Apple OS coders will wave their magic wands and craft a, cmon guys, easy fix. Perhaps the solution for me is to get over my archaic faith in the superiority of Apple. In too many ways Android is looking more and more attractive. And less smug.

I am still having the same problem after downloading the latest iOS update 11.02. My ringtones had to be forcefully brought over to the phone and then assigned to specific people. That said, the default ring tone doesn’t work with my custom ring tone and keeps using a default tone. I also put my phone on silent and when someone calls it will still ring out loud.

called apple support and they said the bug was supposedly fixed, but for “some” people it hasn’t been fixed. This is absolutely bogus and I’m shocked that the company has been so Blaise about this as it’s impacting my business as I’m not able to put my phone on silent and this can be very embarrasing. This entire experience is making me think about finally moving over to Android as this lack fo fix and long timeline is absolutely unacceptable.

Same with the whole character Showing up when typing up I. How is that acceptable Too. Apple quality has gone down dramatically as has the customer service. Stiff competition will help to get these folks humble again.

About a week ago I called Apple because this is really ******* me off. After I let the tech convince me to reset all my settings (which didn’t work and was a nightmare to recover from) she spoke to a supervisor who said it was a ‘known issue’ and they are working on fixing it in a future update. Really? I’ve had many iPhones over the past 8 years or so and updates have never caused this problem.

I had same problem, after upgrading to iOS 11, ring tones stopped working. I tried all methods mentioned on here, on google search, and from Apple support, nothing helped even with all the upgrades to iOS 11. I just got my iPhone X and still tones would not work, so, I decided to try something else. I went to dredge.com, open an account, indicated I was looking for ringtones for iPhone X, and downloaded a couple like what I had to the desktop, then I moved them into the sounds folder. Then I chose one for default, and dam, it worked... I then down loaded more, btw; the downloads are free, and assigned to each person that needed one in my contacts list. I also installed in my wife’s iPhone 6 Plus, all is now good. Hope this helps, maybe more than waiting for Apple to fix... lol

I wondered after Job's death how long it would take for Apple to become Microsoft. It took longer than I thought, but it has arrived. This iOS 11 is a disaster as is High Sierra. Can't use my purchased ringtones on IOS 11, can't accesses some of my peripheral drives on High Sierra. Nothing works right. I forgive occasional bugs here and there but this is beyond the pale. At this point I'm not buying another Apple product unless I see some major changes.

I was fool enough to create my own ringtones 😠😕😟😢

I am also having this issue; though it has slightly improved since it started. I have the iPhone 8 and everything was fine until I needed to reset my phone for another reason and it was after the reset that my ringtones stopped working. Once they stopped working, I tried all of the standard workarounds that have been mentioned here and like everyone else, they didn't work. Then, just this morning I did another "Download All Ringtones" and now the general, persona, ringtone that I have selected for all calls is working, however, the individual ringtones are still defaulting to the general tone. So, it's a step in the right direction, I guess. Now, the test will be to see if this small step forward lasts or if it will revert back to the crap that we have had for a while now.
