Notes app crashes with iOS 11 on iPad 10.5" 256gb 2017

Just bought 2 brand new 10.5" iPad Pro 256gb. One was updated to iOS 11 and the other is at 10.3.2. The Apple Notes app is crashing on the iPad with iOS 11 when either the Apple Pencil or a generic stylus is used to write. Using the keyboard in Notes works fine - just drawing is affected. Other note-taking apps such as Noteshelf work properly. The problem does not occur on the other (identical) iPad running iOS 10.3.2 - both the Apple Pencil and the generic stylus work properly without crashing.

I contacted apple support and spent maybe hour or so on the call, it seems like issue with the iCloud as you mention. I turned off iCloud sync for notes (Settings -> Accounts -> iCloud -> Notes [off]) which removed all of them from my iPad, but I can still access them on my Mac and now the notes app works flawlessly.

Handoff to my Mac actually adds the note to the iCloud, so it's my workaround until it's fixed.

Please contact support as well here: Official Apple Support

Unfortunately, this didn't resolve in a second or two. Granted if that had been the problem, then it would have only been annoying, but that wasn't the case.

I appreciate your response.

The first thing I check when an app crashes is the internet connection. It was strong and remained so over the hour it took to fix the problem.

I did quit Notes

I tried simply turning my iPad off and on

I rebooted iOS so it wouldn't resume the session from suspended flash memory.

I left everything alone for a half hour, then tried again - it still crashed.

That's when I decided to delete and reinstall the app. It has been fine since.

This is an iCloud issue. More and more it's clear that when one has an iCloud or internet connection issue, Notes will gag. It's because every single keystroke or swipe of the pen is logged and sent through the iCloud server so that you can synchronize ("hand-off") to any of your other devices. Notes appears to be more sensitive to this than other apps that do similar things (e.g., Pages, Numbers, etc). Even a momentary stutter in your net connection will create a problem with Notes.

I'm running an iPad Pro (1st gen) with iOS 11.2.2 -- the problem is much, much better than before but it can still occur. Every time I see it happen it's because I'm having an internet glitch, whether it's just for a second or because I'm not in range of Wi-Fi, or my 4G signal is weak, etc. Usually I wait a second or two and it resolves -- annoying but not a real problem. Occasionally I have to quit Notes and go back to Home, and then go back to Notes.

So the real solution is NOT to delete the Notes app -- don't do that! The real solution is to ensure a solid internet connection so that iCloud, running in the background, can do its thing. I would suggest to Apple that a longer term solution is to provide a more robust buffering within the Notes app so that a hesitation or short delay in the network connection doesn't bring Notes to a halt.

I agree, it's not the iPad per se. But before iOS 11 Notes worked perfectly and synchronized across the web using iCloud without a problem. There's plenty of evidence that iCloud is the culprit here (or some rewritten code in the Notes app that does the work with iCloud). If you turn off iCloud the problem goes away. That's why I don't think deleting and reinstalling the app will matter. We'll see what happens to Angie over the next few days. I'd like to be wrong.

Hi Ladik, very interesting and thank you for the heavy lifting there in calling them. Yes, iCloud sync is the issue. I'll try turning it off. I wonder, since the sync part is useful, if this strategy would work temporarily until Apple fixes it --

1) turn iCloud sync for notes off as you say

2) use Notes, generate one or more Notes documents

3) when done, turn iCloud sync back on to sync them to my other devices

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Further work on this problem: I did a number of updates to the office and home Macs, and to the iPad Pro, to iOS 11.2.1. The updates on the Macs brought me to the current version of High Sierra. I'm not sure which of these fixed the problem, or if Apple fixed something on the back end of iCloud. That last one might be relevant as I strongly believe there was an iCloud bug out there somewhere. I also put a new tip on the Pencil; the old one didn't seem worn but I've seen some suggestions elsewhere that this might matter.

Whatever, Notes now works again as it should. I've been pushing it the last two weeks and have not had a single crash. I'm hopeful that the problem has resolved.

Hello owlwhooman,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with Notes crashing when a stylus or the Apple Pencil is used. Here are some troubleshooting steps I'd like to recommend.

First, let's force quit Notes: Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then, restart your iPad: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once it comes back up, open Notes and test if the issue remains. If it does, please try the rest of the troubleshooting provided in this help article, including checking for updates (it may be some necessary security or stylus update causing this), and deleting the Notes app, restarting the iPad, and reinstalling Notes. Test.

If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open
Thanks and have a great day.

So I updated the iPad Pro to iOS 11.2 over the weekend. Heavy use of note-taking today in Notes -- the problems are gone. It's the good old Notes program that worked flawlessly with the Pencil in iOS 10. I was able to open and edit previous Notes without a problem. Handwriting with the Pencil works, adding typed text works, etc.

So whatever the update did it fixed the problem, as best as I can tell today. Color me happy!

Notes crashes all the time on my iPad and iPhone X. I think it is a memory issue. I can get it to work for a while by either (1) rebooting phone, or (2) force-quitting some of the bigger apps (mail, news, etc). After a while, Notes starts to misbehave again.

I think they have written Notes in such a way that it doesn't deal well with low memory conditions, so need to free up memory. But I have a lot of notes (~2500).

I hope that they fix this soon!
