Audio disappears from iOS 11 Screen Recordings when the video is uploaded

So, my most anticipated feature of iOS is finally here... Screen Recording, native, right in iOS.

Only one problem! As soon as you upload the screen recording to YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or even insert it into iMovie the audio disappears. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Have you found a fix?

I’ve got a solution, but it costs $5.99. I want to do everything on my phone and with iMovie. To get the audio from a screencap into the right track so that iMovie can play it, download iConv.

Open the screencap in iConv. Tap it and choose convert. Hit Advanced and choose Audio Track 2. This creates a new mov with the audio from Track 2 either on Track 1 or both tracks. Either way, iMovie will pay the audio from this new file.

You go to Converted Files file and hit Send to iMovie and the new file opens up and the audio plays.

iConv is free, but you can only do one operation per hour. Pay the $5.99 and you can convert and send to all you want.

I have a teacher that is still having this issue uploading to YouTube. I was able to recreate it as well.

What I found is that if we transfer the recording to a laptop (we used AirDrop) and then uploaded it to YouTube, the audio would not play when viewing on YouTube. When we upload the recording directly from an iPad to YouTube, the audio would play when viewing YouTube.

So it looks like uploading the iOS recording via the iPad, directly to YouTube does work for us. We are both running iOS 11.2.6.

The additional problem my teacher had is that her recordings are a little over 20 minutes. The YouTube app on the iPad limits you to 15 minutes of video or 128GB. However, uploading via a web browser does not have this limitation. So, we went to YouTube in the mobile safari app on the iPad and uploaded the video that way.

We did have to have our iPads request the YouTube desktop site before we could get full functionality.

Sound and video played as expected via YouTube after that.

I did read there may be a way to increase your 15 minute upload limit. I will try it an report back.

I thought I had the same issue too until my daughter showed me how to do it. Kids are amazing these days.

Ok so when you press the record key, remember your iPhone has a touch sensitive screen and press it hard and a microphone symbol appears. Then select Audio on. A soft touch like I’m using to type this will not make it appear.

Simple as that 👍-1F3FC;

I have some additional information regarding uploading from an iPad.

When we upload the screen recording using the YouTube app, there is no audio.

When we upload the video from the camera roll (using the share arrow) and choose YouTube, the audio works.

We did enable our accounts for Longer Videos (allowing more than 15 min), but the video would still not upload. Using the YouTube app, the video would give a generic, "Error processing file" message. I suspect it has to do with file size. When uploading the long video from the camera roll to YouTube, it gives us a message that says the video cannot be longer than 15 minutes (even though we have Longer Videos enabled).

Hey guys,

Here is a quick fix I found if you have a MacBook. After I record the video with sound, I go into my camera roll, tap "Select" and then "Airdrop" the video to my Mac. You may even be able to text/email it to yourself but airdropping is much faster.

Once it's immediately sent to your MacBook it is in .mov file and uploads fine with sound to Facebook.

This is how I'll be doing it for now.

I confirm the same behaviour with two audio tracks on my iPad.

When I open the recorded video using VLC media player I noticed that file has two audio tracks, track #1 is just silence (and it is taken by default by most players, that is why you hear nothing), track #2 contains recorded audio.

I don't know why Apple decided to implement it that way, or maybe it is a bug. It is annoying and I hope they will put sound in track #1 by default. Is there some way we could report this?
