How can I play podcasts continuously on iOS11?

The old podcast app would play episodes in your preferred order (oldest to newest, etc) continuously without having to add each episode to the “Up Next” playlist. Is there a way to automatically play all episodes without having to add every episode manually?

Hi,

I too am really frustrated with this change and came across your post when trying to find an answer.

The only workaround I have managed to find for this removed feature is to create a ‘station’ for the individual podcast in question. I had a couple of stations already setup when I updated to iOS 11 where I’d add podcasts of a similar theme e.g. Soccer or technology and realised that the station settings allow you to choose the playing orders (see screenshot). You can then choose to play oldest to newest and they continue onto the next episode. This is a workaround and not a real fix but hope it helps.

For long, I thought they had become crazy. Then digging in the app, I found how to get it and it is in fact brilliant ... though well hidden and not well documented: you can customize multiple lists with selected podcasts which automatically get updated and can be called from the App icon using 3D touch.

Go the Podcast 'Library' page.

Click the 'Edit' button at top right

Create a new station for a given topic for instance

Once it is created, from the main 'Library' page, select the station

Click the 'Edit' button a top right

Click 'Settings'

Click 'Choose Podcasts...' to select those you want in that specific station

And also tune it the way you want : grouping, order...

Using 3D Touch on the App Icon, you'll find the Station and ... ta daaaa ... you can start playing it in a single touch :-)

I have been cobbling together my day's playlist using the Up Next list. I timed myself. I spent 15 full minutes this morning because in a recent iOS update, the Up Next list got very buggy.

When I drag a podcast to another position, sometimes the Up Next list gets corrupted and I have to force quit the Podcasts app. Then when I restart, I select whatever was playing, which will ask me what to do with the Up Next list. Then the order in the list is restored.

I cannot afford to waste 15+ minutes messing around with this app every day, when the exact playlist order I want could be created in 2 minutes in iTunes.

I also don't want to lose the association with iTunes and what has and hasn't been played. I keep a few shows as timeless but most I want to delete when done.

I completely agree with you. It's very frustrating. This is what I think. Apple has to make their apps good, but not good enough, so that people would be willing to spend money on the apps developed by the third parties. Pretty much every app you get off a new iPhone you get will be cool and get you excited, until you have used it for a while. Then you realized that there are certain things the apps just don't cut it, and then you will start to look for other paid choices. It's disappointing, but I don't think it will change.
