Keys missing from iOS 11 landscape Messages keyboard on iPhone 6 Plus ... true?

I upgraded my iPhone 6 Plus to iOS 11 and the helpful extra keys previously appearing on both sides when switching to landscape in v10 have disappeared. Can I get them back somehow?

Addendum, was able to find the GBoard app in the Apple App Store using my iPhone. Originally I had searched on my MacBook Pro. That may be the reason I was unable to find it initially. I have installed GBoard and I'm pleased to say it again looks like extended keyboard of old. :-) Yay! and thank you!

I spoke with an Apple rep today on the phone about this very issue. The “missing keys” in landscape mode are intentional. Why? They did not know. But it is not an IOS 11.0.3 bug. The best thing we can do the rep said is to give Apple feedback on their website. The software developers will read it and check their feedback every hour! I was impressed by that. I guess we have to wait for a future update. You really don’t always know what you’re going to miss until it’s gone!

At the advice of another poster, I went to the App store and got an app called Gboard which had the missing navigational tools. I thought it was a great fix until I realized that since I use the microphone to "speak" my text messages, it took forever for it to be sent to google for transcription. If you type your texts, it would probably be perfect for you.

For some people. Not so much for others. I find the new trackpad feature much more usable.

Let Apple know how you feel here:

Meanwhile, use one of the many third party keyboards available. GBoard has been recommended by a number of people.

No, this forum is for user-to-user technical support. Apple doesn't read here for feedback. If you want to provide feedback to Apple go here:

Saying another keyboard is available is not relevant to the feedback, but it does point out another reason why it is a bad change for apple. Why would Apple want to implement a change that forces people to use a competitor's product, no matter how inconsequential (and I'm not saying the keyboard is)?

Saying another keyboard is available is relevant to dealing with the issue at hand: missing keys that are important to you. Apple has a pretty clear history of making basic apps available and then encouraging third party developers to make additional options. If Apple had a problem with people using Google's (or anyone else's keyboard), they won't allow the installation of third party keyboards.

Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it's ill-conceived or disliked by everyone.

Apple absolutely broke the keyboard. The arrow keys are mandatory to navigate text entry windows of a number of websites and forums. Many people who are adept typists use the landscape keyboard as Apple had it nearly perfected. Then they threw it out. It was enough to make me change phones after being with Apple since 2007. It was a critical human interface tool for those who know how to type and was clearly designed by a professional typist.

I think most understand they can download google keyboard but the existence of google keyboard is no excuse for breaking what was a perfectly functional landscape keyboard.

Google makes phones too, should we just go buy one of those?

No, Apple should not remove functionality from something so commonly used, and an interface item like a keyboard qualifies as commonly used.

The best part is that they replaced the useful buttons with empty space! Seriously?! And the empty space acts like the button next to it to make it even more confusing. What a stupid error.

I’ve seen “me toos” above 500 for several threads talking about this keyboard screw up.

If it better meets your needs, absolutely.

“Me toos” here are largely pointless. Apple isn’t reading here for suggestions. Use the feedback page.

Apple didn’t “break” the keyboard. The changed it. I get that you don’t like the changes. I prefer the the new keyboard. The removal of that undo key at the lower left is fantastic.
