The ipad cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.

Yesterday I updated my iPad Pro 9,7" to iOS 11. All went well. But when I thought I was entering my Apple ID for iTunes, I was tricked into iCloud. I never use iCloud. Not on my iMac and not on my iPad. I just don't want to use it.

When I opened my unwanted iCloud account every button was set to ON. It took me a lot of time to set every button to OFF. In the meantime a lot of my documents (photos) were copied to iCloud. I had to delete them from my iCloud Drive. After I logged out of iCloud I discovered that all my photos were deleted from my iPad.

Of course I had a backup on my iMac. I always sync my photos (and books and music) with iTunes on my iMac. I have updated iTunes to the latest version.

Never before I have had problems with this procedure. But this time all went wrong. It said there was no iBooks App and no Music App on my iPad and after that I discovered that all my books and music was deleted on my iPad.

Several times I got the message "The ipad cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred."

I tried all the usual things - restarted the iMac and the iPad / changed the cable (all Apple cables) / changed the USB port. I succeeded in restoring my books and my music but not my photos (more than 3000). It stops halfway with the above message and than only a few hundred photos are copied.

Before iOS 11 syncing with iTunes always worked great. Now I don't know what to do to solve this problem.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I’ve spent several days dealing with this. The best solution was to erase all contents and data from my iPad and start over. I started by syncing just the photos, nothing else. I got the internal iPad error once. But all 103 photo albums had synced to placeholder icons along with about 400 photos which were synced to the correct albums. I hard rebooted the iPad and synced again and again and again over several hours. Hard rebooted every time. Eventually all photos 21,000+ synced to the iPad and into the appropriate albums. Only after that did I sync everything else which worked just fine. Good luck!

GAZZAA_54,

Thanks for the information. The way that I see my options right now are, 1) back up to iCloud (which I don’t want to do) or 2) leave Apple all together. Currently, several of my iPhones are due for an upgrade. My family and I have 4 iPhones, 2 Macs, 3 iPads, and 5 Apple TVs, so this is a big decision for me. For now, I guess I will wait a little bit longer to see what happens. Thanks again!

Interestingly, the 11.2.2 upgrade seemed to fix the problem with my iPhone that would not receive the photos stored on my Mac (not iCloud) but no go with the iPad. Get the "iPad cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred."

As I have said in another post, I have become very disenchanted with Apple. I have been using Macs since 1984 and also have a bunch of old macs around the house doing various things. I got very angry when my iPhone 6 became unusable with 11.x. It was a great web browser but as a phone, it was terrible. I figure they were trying to push me to upgrade. I have suspected that for years but with this upgrade, they went too far.

For me it's already 4 (four!) months of frustration. My iPad Pro has turned into a very expensive useless toy.

I really doubt that the forthcoming 11.2.5. update will solve this issue. The promising news about that update (see above) now seems to be fake news. I've lost all my confidence in Apple. If after 4 months of working on it, the programmers can't deliver a fix, I doubt they will ever come with a solution. Maybe they don't want to; maybe it's just a way to drive us all into iCloud.

It's sad that you have to switch platforms because of this. If Apple willn't solve this problem, then for me there will be no reason to ever buy a new iPad. I have used Apple computers both in my professional and in my personal life since 1986 and has always promoted Apple above other platforms. But the way Apple handles this problem is a major disappointment for me.

Pity Apple put so much effort in to supressing comments about this problem and so little in to either acknowledging it or fixing it.

Clearly there is a problem; but if you 'google' the problem you mostly get pointed to the Apple site and on the Apple site there is no mention whatever that there is an issue; just the usual suggestion that you re-install your device and your iTunes on the Desktop and copy all your stuff to iCloud and let them look after it for you.

Of course if an Apple product stops working correctly it must be the fault of Microsoft - seriously that's what their support people told me. "It happens on two different iPads and you have the latest iTunes installed, so it must be Microsoft".....

If they spent half the effort they expend on pretending there isn't a problem on fixing the problem they would have much happier customers.

Remember giants like Wang and Honeywell, the all but disappeared because they lost sight of the fact that they survive by serving their customers.

Apple's 'Mother knows best' attitude and thier insistence that they control everything (even data that belongs to the Customer) will not serve them well....

There is a lot of choice out there and customers will only forgive for so long. My next purchase will be far more considered and Apple are now on a list of things to evaluate rather being my first choice. I cannot be alone in feeling like this.

Apple, stop being so arrogant - admit there is a problem and fix it.............

Same problem here and it also managed to delete all the pictures from my albums. Its the wifes ipad and shes not happy. I moved to a note8 this year somethings are worse but on the whole no apple handcuffs so i dont get the sync problems just copy and paste. So when this ipad is told to die by apple the i think it may be time to get an android tablet. Don't get me wrong when itunes works its the best and the easiest thing out there but when it doesn't Hmmm. I bet Steve is spinning in his grave at this level of professionalism.

Likewise - been tracking this error since September. My 9.7” iPad Pro has exactly the same symptoms - and with 20,000+ photos I wasted many hours. The first sync after the latest iOS 11 update failed again. This is getting incredibly frustrating, particularly when you see updates adding useless emojis etc. but not fixing this. Seems like Apple have already moved on from supporting quite recent iPad models. It does only seem to affect a relatively small batch of ipads though, so I guess there are too few people ranting to move this high enough up their priority list. The general quality of iOS software releases is starting to drive me away from being an avid Apple user to looking elsewhere.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus and none of my NEW photos will sync post (Oct 2017 >). I have an iPad mini which l bought Sept 2017 new and just about ALL of my photo folders don’t sync. The folders are empty on my iPad.

I have reset both devices to factory settings and that didnt help either. I went to the Apple store and it’s a waste of time.

In the meantime l’ve stopped using my iphone to take photos - l have over 60000 photos and l’m not wasting any more time with new Apple products. Once these stop working l will be changing platforms. I used to take over 500 pics a week with my phone and now nothing.

Apple has always been user friendly in my experience, l shouldn’t have to spend hours syncing without success. I’m fed up.

I’m following this thread in the hope that a solution will be found but l doubt Apple even cares.

The simple fact is that they want us to use cloud and that would be fine if it was fast and reliable. I’ve tried using the Cloud and it doesnt do what l need it to do.

I have an iPhone 6 and an iPad mini plus. My iPhone has the photos that I synced prior to the iOS update. My iPad is empty of photos since I reset it to factory settings. I also have over 60000 photos. However, most of mine were taken with a canon camera. I am not planning on investing in any additional Apple products either. I have not and I do not plan on ever using the cloud.

I have an 9.7" iPad Pro. I bought it on April 1, 2016. Now it already seems obsolete and not longer supported by Apple.

It was rather expensive - in Holland we pay more in euro's than dollars in the US. But it looked like a good investment. But now that I cannot sync my photos anymore (made with a digital camera) and use Photos on the iPad in a useful way, I regret my investment. Like others I will never use iCloud. Unless this problem is solved by Apple there will be no more investments in Apple products by me. By not giving good and expected support to his loyal customers Apple will lose a lot of these people. So sad.

I tried Photo Manager Pro 5 as an alternative to Photos, but this is a very simple app and definitely not "Pro". The things it does, it does well, but that's it. It's missing a lot of features.
