The ipad cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.

Yesterday I updated my iPad Pro 9,7" to iOS 11. All went well. But when I thought I was entering my Apple ID for iTunes, I was tricked into iCloud. I never use iCloud. Not on my iMac and not on my iPad. I just don't want to use it.

When I opened my unwanted iCloud account every button was set to ON. It took me a lot of time to set every button to OFF. In the meantime a lot of my documents (photos) were copied to iCloud. I had to delete them from my iCloud Drive. After I logged out of iCloud I discovered that all my photos were deleted from my iPad.

Of course I had a backup on my iMac. I always sync my photos (and books and music) with iTunes on my iMac. I have updated iTunes to the latest version.

Never before I have had problems with this procedure. But this time all went wrong. It said there was no iBooks App and no Music App on my iPad and after that I discovered that all my books and music was deleted on my iPad.

Several times I got the message "The ipad cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred."

I tried all the usual things - restarted the iMac and the iPad / changed the cable (all Apple cables) / changed the USB port. I succeeded in restoring my books and my music but not my photos (more than 3000). It stops halfway with the above message and than only a few hundred photos are copied.

Before iOS 11 syncing with iTunes always worked great. Now I don't know what to do to solve this problem.

I’ve spent several days dealing with this. The best solution was to erase all contents and data from my iPad and start over. I started by syncing just the photos, nothing else. I got the internal iPad error once. But all 103 photo albums had synced to placeholder icons along with about 400 photos which were synced to the correct albums. I hard rebooted the iPad and synced again and again and again over several hours. Hard rebooted every time. Eventually all photos 21,000+ synced to the iPad and into the appropriate albums. Only after that did I sync everything else which worked just fine. Good luck!

I am still waiting, following is a copy of the latest note I sent to the advisors I was working with.

I am writing to request that the above noted case be escalated to senior engineers responsible for iPad/Itunes/Photo syncing. If you review the case you will see the issue has been ongoing since the release of iOS 11 last fall. To summarize there is a recognized bug while trying to sync photos from a large photo library, in my case stored on an iMac, to an iPad. The case file documents all the various trouble shooting steps that have taken place. However the issue is not resolved and while the Apple advisors i have dealt with have been most cooperative they are not able to indicate who in Apple is handling this issue and working on a resolution.

It has been too long.

I would appreciate it if you could arrange for this issue to be escalated and a resolution found. As documented on the various Apple forums there are many other Apple users experiencing the same issue.

and another note.

Well with all the new iOS updates etc I was optimistic that perhaps the photo syncing issue had been resolved, but NO.

I updated all my units, iMac iPad, and tried to sync. I was hopeful as the process started but at about 4,000 of 8500 pics on my first try the regular error message appeared. At the point only about 300 pics had actually been copied over to the iPad. The iPad indicated it was still syncing but after several hours nothing had changed. Tried again but no luck.

Gentlemen what is the issue? How do we get to the powers at be that will recognize the error messages that we have submitted on the diagnostic files and tell us what is happening… as mentioned in the past, to be told someone is working on it, well lets get an update from that someone…

I think you will agree this has gone on too long. It started last fall and it is now spring. We have had updates to iOS and mac os but no resolution. There are many dedicated Apple product users that are very frustrated with this issue.

Maybe some people had problems with syncing before the iOS 11 update, but for most people the problem started with the iOS 11 update. For me everything worked perfect before that notorious update. I never had problems with syncing my photos with iTunes between my iMac and iPad Pro 9.7". It worked flawlessly! But from the moment I updated my iPad to iOS 11 it became a disaster.

Hi,

Back in January 2018, I consulted the Australian Consumer Association with regards as to what my legal rights were under Australian Consumer Law. I was advised to lodge a formal complaint to the Department of Consumer Affairs as APPLE has clearly breached Australian Consumer Law in failing to support this functionality which APPLE have gone through considerable length to promote in their marketing and support website. If you are an Australian resident with similar problems, I would like to encourage you to lodge a complaint. I am still waiting to hear back from them. So at the moment, as an individual I am holding back my purchase on a new IMAC and IPAD mini. If a resolution is not provided by the middle of the year , I will go WINDOWS and Andriod for my new tablet so I can download and view my photos on a tablet.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know about it because I didn't try to sync my photo's after the last iOS update.

I'm lucky - I still have the old iTunes (12.7.3) in compressed form on my iMac. So I can go back to that version.

I've learned my lesson: before I update iTunes I always make a compressed copy of the old version for safety (and a copy of my iTunes libraries).

I noticed another bug in iTunes 12.7.4. - in album view a lot of the covers are shown as blanks. There is a thread about it on the iTunes forum. Every Apple update of whatever program/app or operating system introduces more bugs than new features.

folks, again. this pic and sync problem started about 2 years ago.

in my humble opinion it has nothing to do with iOS 11, it predates it. i failed to realise the issue in time.

i have over 95k pics on the iPad. i swear hundreds of syncs were necessary to get it back up after getting a replacement iPad. the store advised incorrectly and wasted my time. thats the biggest disappointment. and that happened twice within two years.

here are still current issues:

- after loading beta, i was able to sync 16k pics, then 8k, then 4k....really funny

- the sync "threw" pics in the wrong albums, many of them in all different albums

- if you blow up certain pics as in enlarge, there is a "ghost" pic behind it

- the error message always appears, you release it then the sync usually works fine

- iPad and mac have to be started up fresh in most cases to work with the sync

thats my 2 cents worth...see ya sync sync sync

I have recently exchanged an Ipad pro 9.7 for an new one. I had a battery problem and a problem with photo download from a PC. The new Ipad also has a problem with photo download. Only able to download about 100 photos at a time. Also the reading photos part of download takes far longer than previously. Has latest IOS. Any suggestions? This seems to be an ongoing problem. I never had any problems with my Ipad 2

I have this same problem. I also have had trouble with my iPhone 7 playing music thru an attached cable in my car which started with iOS 11. (iPhone Connectivity to car via cable) Today I realized that the problem has largely gone away. The only change i've made is it upgrade my phone to the latest patch, iOS 11.3.1. I can't wait to see if iOS 11.4 will fix my ipad photo problem, but i'm optimistic. Still, these kind of OS issues are reminiscent of MicroSoft and not Apple.

Hello, I have tried 11.4 Beta 4 , and I still have some strange issue, it syncs, but ...

a) It takes long time-16 hours or so for 11000 photos. Even if it's 2nd time I sync, and I am just adding few more pictures to sync.

b) I can't see some albums in the ipad photo app, but if I search for them by name, then I can see them. ?¿?¿

It seems Beta 5 is ready. Anybody has tested it?

Many thanks. Best Regards,

J.
