The ipad cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred.

Yesterday I updated my iPad Pro 9,7" to iOS 11. All went well. But when I thought I was entering my Apple ID for iTunes, I was tricked into iCloud. I never use iCloud. Not on my iMac and not on my iPad. I just don't want to use it.

When I opened my unwanted iCloud account every button was set to ON. It took me a lot of time to set every button to OFF. In the meantime a lot of my documents (photos) were copied to iCloud. I had to delete them from my iCloud Drive. After I logged out of iCloud I discovered that all my photos were deleted from my iPad.

Of course I had a backup on my iMac. I always sync my photos (and books and music) with iTunes on my iMac. I have updated iTunes to the latest version.

Never before I have had problems with this procedure. But this time all went wrong. It said there was no iBooks App and no Music App on my iPad and after that I discovered that all my books and music was deleted on my iPad.

Several times I got the message "The ipad cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred."

I tried all the usual things - restarted the iMac and the iPad / changed the cable (all Apple cables) / changed the USB port. I succeeded in restoring my books and my music but not my photos (more than 3000). It stops halfway with the above message and than only a few hundred photos are copied.

Before iOS 11 syncing with iTunes always worked great. Now I don't know what to do to solve this problem.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I’ve spent several days dealing with this. The best solution was to erase all contents and data from my iPad and start over. I started by syncing just the photos, nothing else. I got the internal iPad error once. But all 103 photo albums had synced to placeholder icons along with about 400 photos which were synced to the correct albums. I hard rebooted the iPad and synced again and again and again over several hours. Hard rebooted every time. Eventually all photos 21,000+ synced to the iPad and into the appropriate albums. Only after that did I sync everything else which worked just fine. Good luck!

Hi Jdane6200

Im curious how old your iPad was. I've been having issues, and after resetting my iPad (removing all user data) at the suggestion of the genius bar expert I saw yesterday I'm still having the same issue. Previous to this I tried three cables (apple replaced the cables) and reseated my usb ports on my macbook air. Before going to the apple store my macbook wasn't even recognizing my devices when I plugged them in... it would just flash changing/not charging back and forth and nothing would happen. My phone did eventually sync but now after resetting my iPad I appear to be having this problem of only getting about 200 photos before it just stops mid sync (with no message) My iPad is 3 or 4 years old but the genius bar employee told me it should still work. So frustrating.

Hey there,

I'm having the same Problem with my iPad mini 2 64GB syncing from my iMac as well as my MacBook Pro with latest software installed on all devices. Strangely some Photos from Photos.app are synced, witch actually shouldn't be - I selected photos from the last year but strangely photos from '13 to '15 appear. Albums I selected do appear on the iPad but empty. And when I scroll down in Photos.app on the iPad it states a number of photos and then "Synchronizing..." even if it's not plugged in to my Mac (or Charger - WiFi Sync).

I am highly disappointed by Apple! It all seem to have started around iOS 11 (which as well made my iPad almost unusably slow. Since this isn't new I expect Apple to fix this very soon!

This is what I sent to my apple contacts today.

Well with all the new iOS updates etc I was optimistic that perhaps the photo syncing issue had been resolved, but NO.

I updated all my units, iMac iPad, and tried to sync. I was hopeful as the process started but at about 4,000 of 8500 pics on my first try the regular error message appeared. At the point only about 300 pics had actually been copied over to the iPad. The iPad indicated it was still syncing but after several hours nothing had changed. Tried again but no luck.

Gentlemen what is the issue? How do we get to the powers at be that will recognize the error messages that we have submitted on the diagnostic files and tell us what is happening… as mentioned in the past, to be told someone is working on it, well lets get an update from that someone…

I think you will agree this has gone on too long. It started last fall and it is now spring. We have had updates to iOS and mac os but no resolution. There are many dedicated Apple product users that are very frustrated with this issue.

I look forward to a resolution.

I updated my iMac and my iPad, but this time I didn't even try to sync my photos. A waste of time that always ends in a big disappointment. I've lost all confidence in Apple.

But to look at the bright side - now and in the future there will no more need to buy new iPads - and for all that money I maybe can buy something else, something nice that will really work, that will give pleasure instead of frustration.

What amazes me is that none of the Mac rags have taken up this issue. They seem to enjoy mentioning other problems with Apple, but not this one.

I agree with Welshter. Don't reply to us until we finally give up.

I did move to iCloud but it is inferior to what I was able to do with my Mac. I cannot choose the photos I want to be sure to have on my device so sometimes I need to wait for it to download and I am SOL if I do not have access to the web.

that means, there is no use to buy an iPad, since one cannot sync thousands of pics.

not everyone, everywhere has wifi or iCloud connection, thus apple rendered the iPad useless for people like me.

i have over 90 k pics on the iPad. with max 300 pics synced at each sync...each sync taking up to half an hour.....it will take me months to sync all my pics...

i guess.....microsoft here i come....

what is most annoying is that i spent HOURS at the apple store for nothing.....and they should have known.

Is the situation one where we (including me) are not using iCloud? If so, perhaps it's an intentional "bug" to force us to use their storage service (for a fee over 5gig).

If that's the case, we've been snowed by "do anything" marketing and deliberate "kneecapping" of functionality. That would explain the lack of effort on Apple's part.

Sad case. Speaking of case, class action anyone?
