Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

I agree with John. I finally bit the bullet and have purchased 2T of space to store my 450GB photo library. I feel I have been coerced. (I would use a stronger term though my post would probably be rejected) Though I had edited photos on the Mac and deleted the shots that were unnecessary or poor and edited some, none of these changes showed when I would share them with my friends from my phone or iPad.

Now, I have wait as it uploads files at 1 MB/s. I estimate it will take 450,000 seconds. Should finish in 5.2 days if there are no interruptions or problems. <sigh>

i dont think it is a new bug with 11.2.6. My phone has not synced with Photos for months. I have just completely rebuilt my iMac and installed fresh copies of Sierra and iTunes/Photos, and syncing still doesnt function properly.

Hughfromforres I have looked thru Apple support threads since October and cant find an answer anywhere.....

Apple - please help??

As an earlier contributor to this thread, what's increasingly interesting is the range of issues being reported. Using W10 and newest release of iTunes, photos and photo albums from W10 sync with my iPhone 8 Plus (and did with my previous iPhone 6), but haven't with my iPad 2 Air since iOS 11. Like others, on the iPad the photos are in the Camera Roll and Photo Stream, and all of the albums are there, but about 50% of the albums are empty. Yet Icdtlm says his/her iPhone isn't syncing. Others are reporting their Macs aren't syncing. Very confusing, and to this non-technical person, it suggests something else is interfering with the sync process on certain Apple devices.

I wonder if it has to do with Apple switching to Apple File System (APFS) for High Sierra. Everything worked mostly ok before 10.13. APFS is a big system level change to file storage architecture. In addition to this sync issue, many people also reporting very slow performance for the Mac Photos app itself... So frustrating!! Really feels like something is up at Apple and we're all being kept in the dark. In the past, Apple was quick to fix major issues like this. But months are passing by and nothing. I think it's a major problem with older solid state memory and APFS implementation.

Stephen, I was finally able to get my 3800 photos which are in both Windows and iOS-created albums to sync from my PC to my iPad in the same manner you did - sync would crash, disconnect iPad, shut down iTunes, re-boot computer, try again. I probably did it 6-8 times before the last 200 photos synced, and into the proper albums. I would hope that with your Mac experience, and my W10, both using iTunes, someone at Apple could figure this out.

As a previous poster said a couple of days ago, but to reiterate, this thread is not about sync problems with iPhones, but iPads only! The iOS11 bug has introduced a few oddities in syncing with iPhones from iTunes, but by and large syncing to iPhones still more or less works. It seems to be ONLY iPads that have been totally trashed when it comes to syncing photos with iTunes.

We still await a solution from Apple. Any bets on iOS 11.3 sorting it?

Thanks for the clarification tijc! That is my case. Syncing with my iPhone 6 running iOS 11.2.5 works absolutely fine via a USB cable and iTunes on my MacBook Air running OS X 10.12.6.

However, attempting the exact same sync to my iPad Air running iOS 11.2.5 results in nonsense. Lots of error messages, and a random set of a few hundred of my 18k+ photos being synced. None of the techniques suggested in these forums has worked in resolving the issue.

Apple software technical support needs to "fess up" and take ownership of the issue. I can find no such ownership anywhere on the internet, inside or outside of Apple. Since they won't even admit that there is a system level error, they don't address it as they talk about updates or solutions. Very disappointed!

Today's experience with Apple was not professional at all. We- my Apple Consultants Network, MacShaman and I emailed a followup to Apple from over a month ago when a call was scheduled and Apple blew us off completely. Our last few emails went without reply and today we both emailed and we received an email stating

As you requested, Apple will call you at the day and time below. You can add this appointment to your calendar by selecting the attached file.
Apple will call you
When: 2018-March-20 at around 12:30 PM EST

Apple called my Apple Consultants Network, consultant and he patched me into the call, they verified case number and advised that a Senior Consultant would be brought into the call. They put us on hold with music that just annoyed the **** out of us and ate up precious time unable to communicate to one another. When finally they cam back to us, the original operated introduced us then the call dropped... They never rang us back, emailed, or nothing.

The other day Apple consultants notified my Apple Tech consultant and I to let us know Engineers are working on it and to "keep them informed..." when? an update works for our situation. Although, they followed up, it was just a smiling voice to tell us to wait some more a fix is forthcoming. I'm not impressed, and just continuing to us LightRoom as a logical and reliable primary image processing and sharing tool. So the phrase for today, tomorrow and near future is still "Sit on it Potsie!"
