Since iOS11 Bluetooth keeps disconnecting

Since I upgraded to OS11 my iPhone 6 keeps disconnecting from the Bluetooth in my car, a Mazda 6 2015 vintage. To reconnect I have to select the phone on my cars infotainment unit and off it goes working for a while longer until it again disconnects mid song. This didn’t occur prior to OS11, any ideas?

Hello Pathfineroz,

I was having the same problem with my Bluetooth devices continuously disconnecting and then reconnecting on the iPhone after the iOS 11 update. It did this with all Bluetooth devices such as my car, powerbeats, etc. I use my Bluetooth headphones at the gym and on runs so you can see how this was a huge annoyance for me.

Anyways, this morning I was reading some articles and came across one that suggested I should reset all networks. I did that along with hitting the “forget this device” feature. I’ve been using my Bluetooth wireless headphones ever since I did that (for a little over an hour) and voila I haven’t had any disconnection issues!

I am not tech savvy whatsoever and I didn’t read through all of the comments in this discussion so hopefully I am not being repetitive and I am able to provide some assistance.

Hello Everyone,

Well I updated to iOS 11.01 and now instead of disconnecting once during a 45 minute trip my phone now disconnects between every 1 minute and 5 minutes it is so much worse than it was post iOS11.0.

If I connect via USB after a Blue Tooth disconnect my phone decides to reconnect the phone again via Blue Tooth and proceeds to import contacts and stay connected for the whole trip! Work that out? It doesn't want to stream music via Blue Tooth. I hope this is fixed soon as I may revert to OS 10.x

Kind Regards,

I had the same issue on my 6s plus. When I upgraded to iPhone X it sorted the issue out. No problems with any updates since either.

Only thing that could of fixed it was me backing up and restoring on a fresh iPhone. Maybe try backing up and factory resetting iPhone X and restoring?

Some people have cured this problem by doing this on the same phone with mixed results but has to be worth trying?

iPhone 8

iOS 11.2

2016 Lincoln MKZ with "Sync with MyLincoln Touch" - latest version according to Lincoln's "Vehicle Health Report" diagnostics.

When on a voice phone call, the Bluetooth HFP (hands-free protocol) connection between the iPhone and the car will repeatedly disconnect and reconnect resulting in the other party experiencing about 15 seconds of "dead air" during which they continue to talk while unaware that I cannot hear them. The time interval between episodes appears to be random and unrelated to anything else. Since the use of hands-free is a legal mandate in my state and the use of headphones while driving is a safety issue, I have little choice but to seek a resolution to the problem.

Streaming audio which uses A2DP (advanced audio distribution protocol) works fine.

My LG Tone HBS912 (Bluetooth 4.1) works fine for both calls (HFP) and music (A2DP).

I went to the Genius Bar yesterday and although the techs had "heard of" the problem, they had no definitive fix. I allowed a tech to do a factory reset on the phone through iTunes and then did a master reset on the Sync system in my car. I then paired phone to car and tried again. The call disconnected / reconnected about 3 minutes into the call. About 2 hours of total time wasted in that effort.

My *guess* is that the Bluetooth 5 on the iPhone 8 (and X) is not fully backwards compatible with some Bluetooth 4 devices. Users will perceive this as a phone problem since prior iPhone models worked fine in their car, and rightly so. The auto manufacturers will not likely pursue a fix since they, too, will see this as a problem that Apple created and Apple should fix.

Thus, we wait for a permanent fix from Apple.

I've just purchased an iPhone X and I'm having the exact same problem in my 2012 Mazda 3. Everything pairs and connects, but regularly and sporadically drops out, before trying to reconnect again... I never once had a problem with my iPhone 6. I thought it was a compatibility issue within my car (2012 models use Bluetooth v1.0 and iPhone X's are on v5.0), however after taking it into the Mazda service shop – disconnecting, updating to 11.2.1, and re-pairing everything – it was confirmed it was a software issue, and not the firmware in the car.

@Apple, almost 1000 people have this issue (likely more). How many more buggy iOS11 updates will it take to resolve this?

So for the last two months I have been working with Apple trying to troubleshoot and collect various logs from the IPhone X with regards to the BT disconnecting / reconnecting issue. After initially thinking it may be a frequency issue I just received a call from Apple saying that the issue is a “compatibility issue” and because the iPhone X is installed with the latest Bluetooth chip (different to the iPhone 6 etc) my 2013 Mazda 5 is no longer compatible, hence the constant disconnecting and reconnecting. So they’ve told me that I will need to buy a new car stereo that supports Bluetooth 5.0!!! The issue I have besides having to fork out a few hundred more to buy a new stereo is why when I make a call on my iPhone X in the car that it DOESNT disconnect and the issue only seems to be when streaming music, maps etc (actually it disconnects when you do nothing BUT doesn’t when I’m on a phone call!!) Unfortunately they couldn’t answer the question.

Does that mean every Mazda 5 ever made wont work with iPhone X?? They stopped producing them in 2014. There are no firmware updates for the stereos in the Mazda 5 (I checked with Mazda).

The Apple technician told me that if the car supports BT 4.2 then it more than likely NoT work with iPhone X!!

To be honest I don’t think that it’s at all fair. Can there not be some sort of backwards compatibility installed?

I personally think that yes there may be some type of compatibility issue but I have loads of Bt devices and speakers around the house that are A LOT older than my car and they work fine with the iPhone X!!

So for now, for me anyways, it looks like my issue sadly stops here and I need to go and replace my car stereo :(. For others, check that your product says is compatible with BT 5.0, otherwise Apple won’t touch it.

All the best in your tasks to find the answer.

I'm an Apple Developer (I don't work for Apple) and I have a product that uses Bluetooth LE (4.0). We are having lots of disconnect issues as described in this forum on anything that uses iOS 11. It's so bad that I've had to go to Apple Stores to find iPod Touches that still have 10.3.3 and have told my customers not to update to iOS 11. I filed a bug report with Apple and labeled it a "serious bug" and uploaded a video of a side-by-side iPhone 6 (iOS 11), iPod Touch (iOS11), and iPod Touch (iOS 10.3.3). In the video, I placed all of them at a distance to create low signal strength and tried to connect them. All the iOS 11 devices get dropped within 30 secs. The iPod Touch with iOS 10.3.3 stays connected indefinitely. So frustrating! They better fix this, I'm having to order new chipsets that use Bluetooth 5.0, because I thought Apple would fix this issue within the first month of release. iOS 11 and the root password fiasco are signs that Apple needs to layoff the long Christmas vacations and get back to work! This is the worst release ever!
