iPhone 8 GPS problems

On both Google Maps and Apple Maps, the gps doesn't seem to keep up. The apps start up fine but once I start driving the GPS becomes erratic and loses me. Both navigation apps can't seem to locate me unless I re-start the app over and over again. I thought it was a buggy iPhone 8 so I took it back to Verizon (where I bought it) and it was swapped out for a new one, and the new one started acting the same way the moment I hit the road. I haven't used any icloud backups, I set up both phones as new iPhones each time I activated them. I also factory reset my day old iPhone twice before taking it to the store for replacement. The replacement (new) phone has the same issue. Help!

Just went out a few miles drive to test the replacement phone. Drove over a mile with the phone not on the magnetic mount and it worked perfectly on waze and apple maps. On the way back i put it on the magnetic mount and low and behold waze had red No GPS error and apple maps location was way off and wouldnt right itself. I dont think new phones are supposed to be bothered my magnets but thats seems to be the case for me. I know that some people on this thread have it happening when walking or on a non magnetic mount and i hope you find a solution but for others out there using these mounts, try taking it off. Im gonna buy a cradle mount, too much hassle to get phone replaced so User uploaded fileim taking the easy option.

I have this problem but on foot, I have found the gps to be useless on foot due to the incorrect positioning and erratic behaviour. I have an 8 plus and comparing with wife’s 7 both updated to latest ios. I have been in my house with the phones side by side tonight. There is a 50 degree difference in the direction arrow between the phones. The 7 shows my position rock steady the 8 is randomly moving around although it will remain steady for a number of minutes somtimes. If I move around the house with both phones the 8 appears to lag behind the 7 in repositioning or does not reposition at all. I have noticed that the 8 seems to go berserk right after the Screen has turned off and I touch the screen to bring it up again. Seems that maybe the screen going off is linked to the issue? The 7screen does not go off so going to look at standby settings etc.

Now that you mention it, the new Pokémon update no longer holds the screen on when the app is running, this requires constant interaction with the device to keep it from sleeping. Maybe I will set mine to not turn off the display and see if the issue returns.

It could be related to power saving techniques sleeping the gps when the phone is not being used. Having to touch the screen once every 30 seconds to keep the screen on may be just enough to keep the gps running.

I don’t think this error is only related to certain cars. I am using different running apps and all have GPS problems on my new iPhone 8, which did not happened on my old iPhone 5. The first 20-30 minutes it works fine, but then one app (Livelox) stops and no longer update the position, the others (Strava and Runkeeper) continue but with an accuracy of 50-75 m, i.e. completly useless. I am outdoor, in the open and I know that other GPS devices nearby have good connection with the GPS satelites. Eventually (15-25 minutes) Strava and Runkeeper get the accuracy back, but Livelox hangs until restarted. And note, I don’t have any magnets on the case for the phone and no other electronic devices in my pockets. I also have issues with Apple maps and Google maps, they suddenly get really bad accuracy for a while (>70 m), but overall seems less sensitive to this GPS bug.

I also fear it is a hardware issue, the 8 and X have mostly the same hardware and failure of updates to correct it so far lead me towards this conclusioN. I think Apple are getting away with this because many people do not use gps or use it only occasionally and I notice very few reviewers test the gps performance, instead focussing overwhelming on the camera function, hence no negative reviews citing gps issues. Therefore, Apple is burryin their heads in the sand on this issue.

It might be a driver issue. They'd have to replace millions of units. This isn't a Sonata issue. It happens to me in my Charger, some other user was using an Audi, happens in my fiance's Compass. It may be a Bluetooth issue, but I can't confirm. The issue has different degrees of "off" depending on where I am at. It seems to be worse at my home, where the phone is connected to my WiFi, my AirPods, and my Apple Watch. However, it is often connected to the same things at one of my offices but it will only be off by a few feet. At home, this morning, it was off by about 0.2 of a mile. It showed me in an entirely different neighborhood on the other side of a major street here. I keep trying to get iMore to cover this. If you guys can communicate with them or with 9to5, we may be able to get this to whoever we need to get it to.

My iPhone X exactly the same. My old iPhone 5s and my wife’s 6S which worked perfectly before are also having these issues since iOS 11 installed. So hopefully then it’s not a hardware issue. Not sure what to do but wait. I’ve sent Apple feedback online and I don’t want the handset replaced for another that will just be the same. It’s really poor, we were out before and couldn’t use google maps or Apple maps for waking directions because the pin kept floating around.

If you have followed this thread closely, you would see that there is a very real issue with cars interfering with the iPhone 8 or X's GPS. As far as the GPS not working when just walking. I can't say I've used it a ton, but in my brief experience, I haven't had an issue when on foot, only when in my car.

And as far as the other dude, your comment about the cheesy car manufacturer adds exactly nothing to this conversation.

Can I ask if your location floats about when you are stood still as well as not giving a pin point fix? The reason I ask is because I have compared my iPhone X to 2 others and they did not float about. I even tried swapping SIM cards to see if being on a different carrier made a difference but it didn’t. On this basis I’m thinking it could be a hardware issue plus a software issue. I may have to get mine swapped over.

I bought the 8 a couple of weeks ago and the maps worked fine until last night while driving 90 miles to my families house. I thought it must be an occasional interference issue with the satellites so I shut the iPhone off. started driving home a few hours later and the same thing happened. Google maps drifts. Same with WAZE, except with WAZE you get the “No GPS” message.

I am wondering, could it be the case I have around it? I just put the OtterBox commuter on it and although it did work fine with it on, maybe there is some interference. I will put my old one back on and see if it helps.

Its a a long shot but worth a try.

UPDATE....

So the issue I had with mine occurred while driving my wife’s 2012 Hyundai Sonata. I have read some posts where there may be some interference with the car. I also own a 2011 Sante Fe and drove it today around town to see if Google Maps drift.....

And can you believe it......Google Maps worked fine. Not the case, not the satellites. It worked perfect....

Last nights ride in the Sonata was the first time I used in in that car, so I wonder if there could be some interference going on....

Going to try it again in the Sonata tomorrow and see if the problem still occurs....

GPS won't update my location (for any mapping apps) - that is, it would only show where I was yesterday without updating where I actually am. Got my 2nd iPhone 8 plus 2 weeks ago, and now the same thing happened as my first iPhone 8 plus! Apple was only willing to replace my first iPhone 8 plus after going to Genius Bar three times (and waited many hours), called in Tech Support once, completely erasing my phone and start from scratch as Genius Bar asked (again took many hours), and replacing a SIM card from my carrier. All that for nothing since the 2nd iPhone 8 plus is acting the same way! For the first iPhone 8 plus, GPS would work on and off randomly and by the time I showed up for my Genius Bar appointment, it would work and the diagnostics would show normal and operating. Then the next time the GPS stopped working, I brought it in to the Genius Bar and that's when they diagnosed it as not working and finally agree to replace it. This clearly seems to be a hardware issue or some defective GPS issues. I don't know how many iPhone 8 plus I will need to go through so that I can actually use my mapping apps! God forbid I lose my iphone now and Find My iPhone wouldn't even work!

A senior adviser got back to me this evening. The engineers have looked at the issue of the GPS location drifting and have said this is NOT expected behaviour. They are therefore looking into it further but can give no timeline as to when they expect it resolved. They said that as I have experienced this issue on orig and replacement X and also on a 6S which was ok before iOS 11, they believe it is software related but it may be difficult to address given it affects multiple devices. The only good news (if you can call it that) is that they didn’t dismiss it by saying it was expected behaviour and close the case.

Many people in this thread including me seem to have a Sonata. I mounted mine in the center console on a grip style cradle, not magnetic.

I have had cell phones since they were invented, and in the bad old days the gps was extremely unreliable and only worked in certain places and holds.

But I have owned 4 phones since I bought my 13 Sonata, not counting my new "X". All the others worked 100% of the time ANYWHERE in the car in the cradle, on the floor etc. The X worked about 50% of the time.

I got my money back from Apple and went back to my iPhone 7 which has a modern gps meaning it works just fine wherever I put it.

I revisit this thread weekly but I suspect its a hardware problem personally.
