iPhone 8 GPS problems

On both Google Maps and Apple Maps, the gps doesn't seem to keep up. The apps start up fine but once I start driving the GPS becomes erratic and loses me. Both navigation apps can't seem to locate me unless I re-start the app over and over again. I thought it was a buggy iPhone 8 so I took it back to Verizon (where I bought it) and it was swapped out for a new one, and the new one started acting the same way the moment I hit the road. I haven't used any icloud backups, I set up both phones as new iPhones each time I activated them. I also factory reset my day old iPhone twice before taking it to the store for replacement. The replacement (new) phone has the same issue. Help!

iPhone 8, iOS 11

Just went out a few miles drive to test the replacement phone. Drove over a mile with the phone not on the magnetic mount and it worked perfectly on waze and apple maps. On the way back i put it on the magnetic mount and low and behold waze had red No GPS error and apple maps location was way off and wouldnt right itself. I dont think new phones are supposed to be bothered my magnets but thats seems to be the case for me. I know that some people on this thread have it happening when walking or on a non magnetic mount and i hope you find a solution but for others out there using these mounts, try taking it off. Im gonna buy a cradle mount, too much hassle to get phone replaced so User uploaded fileim taking the easy option.

To update everyone who is having these GPS issues, I originally started this post back in September after purchasing the iPhone 8 and subsequently returned the phone after having it replaced by a new one. Anyway, an apple tech named Cameron, who was very nice, had been trying to get in contact with me since last week to ask me about the issues I had with the phone (kudos to apple for following up on this) and I spoke to him today. He just had a couple questions about the issues I had and I gladly obliged. Pretty basic call, only concerning thing was when I asked if they were working on a fix he said he didn't know when a fix would be made and couldn't give any sort of timeline, so I hope some of you are still within your return window.

Also of note, everyone I've encountered (about 8-9 people) with either an iPhone 8 or 8 plus is having this issue as well, so this may be bigger than a software issue but crossing my fingers this gets fixed for you all. I'm happy Apple is on the problem, however, for an $800-1000 phone with taxes, this kind of stuff shouldn't be happening. Me personally I will probably wait to upgrade next year, when either Apple gets the kinks out of the GPS or another company makes something nicer that works. Either way, best of luck to you all, just thought I'd chime in.

Ok so another update from me (I’m onto my third faulty iPhone 8).

I spoke to Apple support again, and I said I’ve had enough and just want a refund. I gave the (very polite) person on the phone all the case numbers from my previous contacts and she understood immediately what I was referring too - whereas previously I had to explain everything from scratch.

After asking her if Apple are aware of the problem, and to make sure I’m not the only one contacting them, she, in apple speak, said she’s confident that there is nothing I’m doing that is causing the issue, and that she believes if I swap my device over again, everything should be fine.

I suppose this is as close as we can get to an admission from Apple of a dodgy batch of phones in the early shipments hitting the stores??

I’ll post again after next Tuesday when I get my fourth iPhone 8.......

For me, the problem is apparently gone since two things occurred in quick succession:

1. my phone slid off a table and landed face down on a wooden floor 2 feet below (no visible damage)

2. I installed iOS 11.1

Can't say for sure which (or even if either) fixed the issue - most likely the iOS upgrade, but if there was some kind of dodgy connection internally it might explain some of the random orientation change correlations some people are seeing.

Now I'd never suggest someone go slapping their phone around to see if it would change anything, but I did used to have an iPad with a dodgy screen connection that would be re-seated by a good slap on the back...

Just to add stats here, my iPhone X has exactly same problem.

basically the Maps are useless now during driving as it doesn't lock the GPS.

my wife's iPhone 6 locks immediately and provides a smooth navigation.

I have tried all the tricks so far:

install iOS 11.2 beta 3 - no use

hold phone - no use

hold phone in landscape/portrait, no use

reset network settings - no use

reset location & privacy - no use

set region to somewhere else and set back - no use

too all users that have problem, do you have an Intel modem or QC modem?

mine is Intel.

I thought I had this thing licked with the SIM card replacement which seemed to fix the problem until I connected the phone (iPhone 8 which replaced my original iPhone X which also had the problem) to my car's bluetooth. Then the same thing happened again. Yesterday I returned the 8 and got another X and it is having the same problem. I was trying to isolate when it was acting up vs working and it seems from my limited experimentation while driving that if the phone is by the radio and in the car mount it goes between loosing the GPS signal (no GPS signal message) and getting hung up in one location while I am driving miles away to thinking all of a sudden that I am on another road blocks away to rarely working as expected in both Waze and Apple Maps. When I moved the phone to rest on my leg away from the radio it seemed to work although the location prevented me from keeping more of an eye on it. So I don't know if proximity to the radio (XM and FM) have anything to do with the problem or not. My iPhone 7 worked just fine for a year in the same mount in the same location in my car, so the issue has something to do with the new phones. I am hoping it can be corrected with a software update because otherwise it is a big problem in the design of the phones and their components. I hope someone finds a solution soon.

Par for the course. They literally just deleted my four paragraph response as a violation for recounting their terrible customer service dealing with this for over two months.

To everyone following this: just return it or stop trying new things. They are aware of it, they’re not doing anything to fix it, and have no timeline to do so until it becomes the next “-gate”.
